Texas has a couple of "Brownwood"s. Which one are you talking about?
Are you meaning the on that's kind of west and inbetween Dallas and Austin?

I live 45 miles from Brownwood, and I have done 2 rounds of clinicals at Brownwood hospital. I don't want to scare you, but I will be honest about my opinion of that town. The nurses at the hospital have been wonderful to me and my class, though I have heard bad things from other classes. Now at times when I sit outside to smoke I have come accross some rude people. I know...rude people live everywhere. So I don't know if the nurses are being nice to us students because they are wonderful people or if it is because we are lightening their load. I hope it is because they are wonderful. All through the town I have come across many rude people, and why that upsets me so much is because you really don't expect that from a smaller city (I am originally from San Antonio). I talked to a young lady new to Brownwood (she moved there 2 weeks prior from New York) and she said that I was the first person to talk to her in that time. That made me sad for her. Me..I am friendly and can't stand rudeness, especially when it is uncalled for. Be prepared. Last semester we traveled to Dallas to do a 3 day clinical at a childrens hospital. I discovered how truly wonderful a hospital can be, and for the next 3 semesters I will travel far and wide before I do another clinical at Brownwood hospital. Not that I have had any real bad experience there, but I have done my time there and now I am ready to move on. We are hoping to sell our property, and move closer to Stephenville area (about an hour from Brownwood), and if I never see Brownwood again in my entire life, that will be just fine. I don't want to scare you, I just don't want you moving there with the expectation that small town folks are just "groovie", because that is not necessarily the case. Beware: some of the Super Walmart cashiers are SHOCKINGLY rude!! This advice was meant to prepare you, not scare you! I hope your new venture turns out to be wonderful.

I grew up in the Brownwood area. I haven't lived there since 1990. I now live in Houston!! I do have family there and I visit for the holidays. I don't think the people are rude. I always found the people to be your typical small town folk. My problem with the town (pop. 19,000 or so) was that there wasn't much to do. There is one movie theatre and the mall isn't much to speak of. I hear that there are more business coming to town. A rumor says Starbucks, Lowes, Home Depot! So, I guess that is improving. Another issue, not much diversity. I am hispanic and even hispanics are few and far between.
When I'm done with nursing school in a couple of years, I plan to move back. So I guess it's not that bad! Honestly, if it wasn't for family, I don't think I would ever live there. But I'm ready for some peace and quiet. You now, the simple life. If that is what you want, then Brownwood would be just fine! Good luck and maybe we'll run into eachother sometime!

I just moved from Brownwood to the Houston area. Brownwood is a nice town. I did my clinicals at Brownwood Regional. I thought it was a great hospital. All the nurses I worked with seem to go out of there way to teach me and help me out.
I have lived in Texas my entire life and have never heard of another "Brownwood" ? There is a Brownsville?? Anyway, Good luck! I hope your happy there - I think it is a great place to raise kids. My kids really miss it.

Brownwood natives don't warm up to outsiders too quickly is all. The longer you stay the more you will get used to it. The worst part about the town is that the people that run the show are the worst idiots of all and everyone is complacent about it all... Typical small town.
You mind sharing how has your time at BRMC been? I'm graduating soon and will be deciding whether to move to Austin or work in Brownwood. The majority of stuff I've heard about nursing at BRMC is negative.

My coworker, a student at Tarleton State University's BSN program, has done many clinical rotations in Brownwood. Many rural Southern towns are also "closed societies," meaning that the local folks are unfriendly and mistrustful toward outsiders until they get to know and trust you. Since you are likely a Filipino nurse, you will possibly stand out like a sore thumb in this town.
