Anyone attending OCCC's Nursing School?

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

I have been accepted into OCCC traditional pathway starting Fall 2012 and was hoping to meet and possibly network with other students in my program. I would love to find others in my cohort to lend each other support as we embark on the nursing school journey. I am very excited to get started, yet also terrified! Orientation is less than 3 weeks away, but it feels like forever still.

I would love to hear from you if you are attending OCCC.

Hi :) I will be attending OCCC Traditional Nursing Pathway this Fall. Im also excited yet terrified to start. Picked up my scrubs yesterday and everything is starting to seem more official as the days get closer. Cant wait to meet all of our classmates on Orientation :)

Orientation is less than 3 weeks ahead. I am taking A&P2 this summer, and this upcoming week is "finals." It has helped keep me busy, but I know I am going to just be counting down days. I got my scrubs a while ago and my books too. I got a good deal on the Fundamentals (Wilkinson) online on Amazon. I don't know if the deal still applies, but it's worth checking out if you haven't already purchased them.

What part of town do you live in? I am in Edmond. Long drive, but worth it. I am kind of hoping to find other classmates who live up this way to maybe get together with for some kind of informal study group.

I look forward to meeting everyone at orientation too!!!! It's so exciting!!

Sorry I dont know if you are getting my PM messages, it says that I have not had enough quality post to send a PM. I am actually located right near OCCC but I have reliable transportation and I was interested in joining a study group as well. I have not bought the textbooks yet, its next on my list to get :) I have seen them though because my sister in law has all of them that she does not use. I was going to look on Amazon for some good deals and will probably start ordering this week. Did you get any of the optional text? Its so nice to finally talk to someone on here thats in the same program :)

I haven't gotten any of the optionals yet. Waiting for my Pell to come in at the book store before I buy anything else, but I do plan on getting the Fundamentals Success book cause I heard it really helps. I love studying with a group. We don't study hard-core all the time, but I have noticed that if someone doesn't understand a concept, another person in the group probably will and explaining things to each other reinforces it. I am a mom, and I have three kids and studying at home for me is H A R D. Especially with my youngest, who is 2. Group studying helps keep my study time focused. Like right now, I should be studying for fetal pig, but I have this massive post wisdom tooth extraction pain and I just can't concentrate!! LOL

I also have 2 kiddos that love to make sure Im not studying :) My son is 2 and my daughter is 5. I think it would be great to have a close set of study buddies that could help understand concepts that may be hard to grasp from a different point of view or even to just keep eachother balanced with deadlines, skills, ect. Its also good for repetition, so after studying on your own, hearing it lectured, then discussing it with a group so it can retain better. Who is your professor for A&P2? I had professor **** and he was amazing :)

Yup, I have ****! I love him too. He can be a pain in the behind when it comes to asking questions though. I had him for AP1 too. Was Fetal pig hard? We have the exam on Tuesday. I am so unprepared I feel like.. ugh.

I am glad 2 of my kids will be in school. My son, who is 6, will be in 1st grade, and my Daughter who is 4 is in pre K. My youngest daughter will be home with Grandma whenever I am not home.

I think what worries me most about nursing school is the tests. I am good at critical thinking, but it's a different kind of critical thinking. I know it will come with practice but oy vey. When you are used to getting high grades on your pre-req exams, getting a B or C is a tough pill. I know I will be okay, but I feel the need to prepare myself mentally for the "shock" since everyone tells me my grades will take a hit.

I used the powerpoints that he had on Angel to study and made sure that every part on the list was identified. I did it in segments, like first I would study the muscles, then another catagory. Also on our exam ALOT of the veins/arteries were on it. Some things were easy give away questions and others were a little tougher. i made sure I put check marks next to the ones I was not sure about, no answer is used twice, and i went around the exam probably 3 times to check over everything again.

My daughter is starting Kindergarden and my son will be in daycare so I can have time to get everything done. Grandma will also be watching mine on Saturdays if I need time for anything.

I am actually terrified of Nursing Exams lol especially from everything ive been reading about them on here. I have done really well in my prereq's and have only recieved a "B" in General Chem 1, which was a 88%. It took me awhile to accept that lol so Im scared to take a nursing exam because im my own worst critic. I think im going to get the Saunders NCLEX review guide so I can get a preview at those type of test questions.

Have you got the patches to go on the scrubs? Did you go to a place to have them put on? Im still kind of new to OK so Im not familiar with a place that does it.

I think Im really nervous because a classmate that had went with me through prereq's had started the BADNAP program at the start of the summer and she dropped out about a week ago because of how hard it was. I know it is at a faster pace then traditional route but my sister in law also failed out of traditional at occc. she failed 3rd semester and she was able to retake it then she went on and failed the 4th semester so she was not longer able to stay in the program. I want to get off to a good start and hopefully not get so overwhelmed and try to stay ahead.

Are you going to put in a preference for your clinical placement?

Thanks for the tips!!!! I plan on looking at powerpoints all day tomorrow. I have a good grasp on the internal organs, and the muscles.. I think.. but the arteries and veins I am shaky on.

I have the Saunders NCLEX book, and I like what I see.

I got the patches and name tags at the book store. I plan on just ironing them on, the getting some white thread and securing them so they won't fall off during washing. It's not something that requires any more trouble than that. I can help you if you want :) Have you got your shoes yet? I went to New Balance here in Edmond and they were expensive, but now that I have actually been wearing them I must say I feel it's money well spent.

I plan on putting in a preference for clinical placement if I can see the instructor. I have been told that ****** is the best Clinical instructor by a friend who is a semester ahead of us. She also said that ***** can be nice, but she is kind of one of those "nice to you if she likes you" type of people. I think I am going to opt for OUHSC in all honesty. They are used to students there.

Don't let anyone elses failures get in the way of your own success. It sounds like we are a bit alike in that we are "perfectionists." I hate to get anything less than an A. I think that for me it's because I know I CAN do better, and it bugs the crap out of me if I don't achieve what I know I am capable of. I have relaxed a bit since knowing I got into the program, but still the crave for the A is there.

My plan for success is to A: Make sure I read the assigned chapters BEFORE class B: Take Notes C: Do many practice questions and D: Make sure I don't get behind on the assignments ( case studies, care plans etc ) I am really hopeful to get that study group together. I really would like to have you in it. I think 3-4 people is a good size for a group.

You said you were new to OK? Where are you from originally?

I am also starting the traditional nursing program this fall :)

I also live in Edmond :)

I have 2 kids, ages 13 and 11 :)

I too am a perfectionist when it comes to school and studying :)

Sounds like we should meet :)

I took A&P II this past spring with (he who can't be named $$). He is a great professor.

Good luck on your final.

occcstudent2012 its really nice to meet you! now we are 3 of 72 ;) how has your summer been? are you currently taking any classes? have you got any of your supplies yet?

Im actually going to get my shoes, lab coat, and the patches for the scrubs this week. I didnt see that there was any specific type of shoe needed just all white right? Ill go try on some NB and see how they are since you like them, did u get them at the Quail Mall or at a NB store? Im going to try ironing on the patches and maybe putting a few stitches in them like you suggested but I may need some help lol. Oh and Im going to grab a stethoscope to, I already have a cheaper one from Medical Assisting so Im going to get a Littmann. Have you guys got a stethoscope yet? I saw some at the outlet mall where I bought my scrubs but they were a little pricier then I saw online with the free engraving.

Before OK i lived in AZ. Ive only been here for 2 years and spent most of the time in Yukon, OK. Still getting used to the city but I love it here way more then I did in Phoenix, Az. Even though I lived there all my life there has always been so much violence. When my hubby and I started a family he was from OK and I wanted to move here to see how it was, and I LOVE it :)

Im grateful for the opportunity to be in the program with you guys, cant wait to meet you :)

Gotta make this quick since I am about to take the stupid fetal pig exam. lol I bought my shoes at the NB store. I bought all my uniform stuff, including stethoscope at the Uniform Shoppe which is on May, just south of Hefner.. they give a discount for students. They have EVERYTHING you need, including shoes, but since I knew I wanted NB ones I went to NB.

Occcstudent, Nice to meet you!!!!!

Back to studying.. Could use some prayers sent my way.
