Anyone attended UMASS BOSTON

Published

I am starting nursing school in the fall 05 at UMB and I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through there nursing program or is attending it now and what they think of it. I am not really sure what to expect. I have heard that they have great clinicals but I would like to hear it from a student's perspective. Did you feel like you were ready to head into the nursing world when you were finished or did you feel unprepared. What were the instructors like?

sunshine-i attended umass dartmouth, i'm not sure how similar the programs are, but i will tell you that the umass system in general did a fairly good job in preparing me for the real world. any new grad will tell you, that they don't feel prepared when they graduate, and as far as i'm concerned-it's true!!! the only thing that truly can make you feel ready to face the day as a full-fledged nurse, is being one! you will learn more in your first year as a nurse, then you will in nursing school. but i have much faith that the umass system will give you a great baseline of knowledge that you will use over and over again in the future.

good luck to you!:twocents:

I am a transfer student. I go for my advising on May 10. They had some credits that were not transferred but also not declined so I still have to talk to them about that. It's my language so as long as those go through also I should be going in as a sophmore. What about you? Are you a transfer or a freshman ?

The entry exam wasn't hard. I don't know what math you have taken for your master's but depending on that is what you need to take a placement for. I believe that if you have taken calculus already then you may not have to take a math (but don't quote me on that). I haven't taken a math in a long time-- so I had to go back and get review books for the pre-algebra and algebra part. I have not taken statistics yet so I needed to pass the part B area. You may want to call them to ask if you even need to take it. You probably already have both English classes. All you really had to do was respond to a story with critical thinking in mind. They said they won't make you retake a English if it transfers but they just want to see how you stand when it comes time to take the Writing Proficiency Test. Was not that bad. Wish I was a little more prepared for the Algebra part. If you are going to go to UMB, I would try and get it over with, so that you can go through advising and sign up for classes. I still have a lot to take so I have to cram whatever I have left over in the next semester because then the nursing classes basically start. Let me know what your decision is-- we may be in some of the same classes.

Hi Sunshine

I am also accepted to UMB for fall as a transfer. I really only have to take the nursing courses as I already have a degree and have done the pre-reqs. I see the first nursing course is scheduled for 2nd smester sophomore year. Does that mean it would take me a full 3 years to do the degree? They don't offer any nursing courses in the summer so that is the major thing holding me back from UMB. I am also accepted to Massasoit (I turned down Curry) which is my first choice school, but I am not impressed by their Peds rotation, which is my major interest. Everything else about it is great. Let me know what you find out. I take the placement test in 2 weeks.

I don't know if you have already taken it, but I think that you might need to take the Lifespan G&D (NU230) and the Health Promotion & Teach (NU212) which is a Intermediate Seminar class. If you have already taken Physcology across the Life Span they may transfer that for NU230 but I am not positive. That's something that I am looking into because I may try and take it during the summer. But if you already have both of those classes already, I think that you may be able to take the first nursing course in the fall. I looked under some of the available courses in the catalog and they have some of the classes that are in the curriculum for the spring semester available for the fall. (Which will mean 2 1/2 years) Ex. Intro to Nursing, Pathophysiology, etc. I am not 100% positive though. Still trying to figure out a lot of the information myself, but I have read up on a lot of it and tried to find out info. If I find out any other information on Tues. I will let you know. Good luck on your choices.

I haven't taken NU 212, which means that would be the only class I would take in the fall if they didn't let me register for the next semester's classes too. That would mean it would be a full 3 years before I graduate. I think I am sticking with Massasoit. I can be done in 2 years and do an online RN-BSN afterwards. I am also curious if they would make me take the Chem 130. I took 2 Chem classes already -- Intro to Gen Chem and Intro to Organic/Biochem. I looked at the syllabus for Chem 130 and I covered all the topics in my classes, but it says you are required to take the class there. Still let me know what you hear after your advising session. Goodl luck.

no...i am going to be a senior in high school next year but i want to go there the next year any suggestions?

My advising went well. I did not really get to ask that many questions because there was only one advisor there for the group of us but at one point she did mention that if all of our prerequisites were met that we would be able to sign up for clinicals. The problem is that you would have to take CHEM130. There is no equivalent Chem from another school. If you are still interested you might want to contact a advisor from the nursing department. I do not know exactly how they would work things out with a circumstance like that. I know what you mean with the difference between going for two years or three. I debated with the same thing. I want the experience from the clinicals @ UMB though. It's a tough decision to make.
