Anybody CNL-UVA?

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi,

I am pre-nursing student interested in CNL-Clinical Nurse Leader Pragram offered by UVA. I have read everything about it on UVA-nursing website but would like to listen from real CNL student about the program and scope after the program. Anybody there?

Thanks,

Hi TBR, I'm currently a first year CNL student at UVA. I'll try to answer the best I can. I like the program thus far, its gotten intense over the last half of the semester. Its a fairly new program, so it is not without its hiccups.

Hi Katmarie,

I'd love to hear more. Why has it increased in intensity so much? Is it doable? Are you learning great stuff?

I know you may not have much time, but would you like to meet for a tea or smoothie some time. I'm one of the partners at Sublime All Natural, a food and juice bar on the UVa corner, behind Starbuck's on Elliewood.

I would love to hear more about the program. Thanks so much for replying.

Sincerely, Tim

Tim, I pm'd you. Let me know if you didn't get it.

Hi Kathleen,

Wow, you sound busy. My son Bodhi just turned one yesterday! Exciting. You're in for a treat. Is this your first?

I don't know how to PM back. Maybe I need to upgrade my account.

Maybe at the start of next semester (or later--with the baby and all) we can meet for a tea, or a playdate! Bodhi is just starting to interact with those in his playgroup.

Thanks so much being in touch. I look forward to hearing more about the clinicals.

All the best (and congrats), Tim

Hi KM,

I have to post fifteen messages to be able to IM. Before I knew that, believe me I tried.

I just took my GRE's today. How did you do on them? What are the UVA requirements.

I've also been reading up on CNL's. How well are they received at UVa, as far as getting jobs?

I know I have a lot of questions. Please let me know when you get time to reply.

All the best, Tim

Hey Tim, Things have been crazy with school wrapping up and such. I think I got a 1150 on my GREs. 660 Math, 490 Reading, Analytical writing was 4 or 5. I can't remember. There are people who did better and worse in my program. UVA really considered the whole package when admitting students. I will say this, there are about 20% of us who applied and didn't get in the first time (myself included). We continued taking prereq's and did well, reapplied and were accepted.

As far as CNLs and jobs, when you graduate and get your RN and CNL, you are considered a novice nurse. You are often hired as a novice nurse. The master's degree CNL program prepares you to think more dynamically about patient care, but also gives you an edge in going further in your career after a few years of practicing. Several of the students in my class are considering going for their NP or PhD after this program.

Kathleen

heh Kathleen,

Great to hear from you. Hope school and life are going well in all the craziness.

Thanks for the feedback on gre's.

One question with salary ... does the Masters mean anything in that regard? This is a question I haven't sorted out.

Take your time in getting back to me. Once I post 15 messages I'll get the right to IM.

All the best, Tim

Up late, eh?

The salary thing is probably going to be on the job you are applying for. Most hospitals give a little more for an MSN as opposed to ADN or BSN, but like I said, starting out, we are considered new nurses. So I wouldn't expect too much of a differential right away.

Things I considered about this program is that it was 2 years, like many ADN, or second degree BSN. I applied to all sorts of programs and got into a few second degree BSN and UVA's MSN. If its going to take 2 years, regardless, I wanted the degree that is going to give me a bigger "bang" for my time.

With that being said, its pretty time consuming. Most of my classmates do not work, or if they do, its part time. A couple (without young families) do work full time and go to school full time (I don't know how they do it). But I'd be prepared to commit about 40-50 hrs a week to the program itself.

Hi Kathleen,

How's it going? How did the year end up?

I hope you are doing well.

I'm putting the final touches on my application now. I met with Clay Hysell before going on vacation, and he was very helpful.

talk to ya soon, tim

Hey Tim,

Good that you met with Clay! He's very helpful! I finished the semester on a high note and a baby! So everything has been good-- except the lack of sleep ;-)

Are you applying to other schools also?

Kat

Hi Kat,

Yes, I'm also applying to VCU and PVCC. I'm hoping for UVa, though.

Congrats on the baby. Boy or girl?

Are you still in school or taking the semester off?

Cheers, Tim

I'm applying to UVA, VCU and PVCC, too. Are you taking pre-reqs now?
