I 've already applied to Umaryland (BSN program) and i have a GPA of 3.0. I am currently taking micro which im getting an A. This would raise my GPA to 3.05 . I had a B in A&P 1,C in A&P2,C in chem lecture, B in chem lab and my soon to come A in micro. I have 4 C's ,5 A's and 8 B's. im just worried because i don't know how they are going to calculate my chem grade( thats whether use the C from lecture or the B from lab). im taking A&P 2 over this fall and i just don't know whether they will use my old grade or hold on since im retaking the class this fall. Is any of u guys applying for SPRING 2007 and what are your GPA's? What do u also think about my GPA. I wrote an excellent essay and i have already had my instructors sent my recommendations. i've not heard from them yet and when i called they told me they have not started processing the applications yet.

I will ask next week if they have a book list that we can access. I got a book from AACC's required list that was helpful in test taking strategies and looking at NCLEX type questions.

Its called

Test Success: Test taking techniques for the beginning nursing students. By Patricia Nugent and Barbara Vitale.

It's designed essentially to prepare for the type of testing that you will see in NS. It's hard to gauge how spot on it is since I haven't been to NS yet :)

It's a good book. However, two things should be considered first when looking at questions and answers.

1) Your ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Bleeding, Circulation) always takes precedence when deciding which answer should come first.

2) Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

If neither of those two options help with the answers provided then I'd move on to the Nursing Process, all encompassing words, restatement of words in the question and answer, False/False, etc. as outlined in the Nugent text.

Good luck in the Fall.

Is there any subjects we should study ahead of time to give us a good start? I have heard that pharmacology is the difficult one during the first semester.

Yep, patho-pharm is the killer. Five hours of lecture on Fridays.

Beyond having taken your prereqs I don't know what you could do to prep.

Well, I went to info session today. The admissions counselor had less info on clinical times and such than our counterparts here, so thanks to the past students for the inside information. She said that students usually had the choice between two 6 hr clinical days a week, or a single 12 hr clinical day. I definitely favor the single day.

It does sound true that they are making a concerted effort to move toward loking at the whole package an applicant brings to the table and really emphasized the entrance essay. This is not the place to slack off because you think your grades are that good.

FYI- the new student center, located adjacent to the SON, will be opening January 2009 and looks awesome! swimming pool, athletic facility, student lounges, restaurants..lots of good stuff. Another perk!

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this thread!

The was only one site that offered two 6 hour clinical days, one semester, and the two days were in the evening, something like 3p - 9p. I believe it was pediatrics.

It is not the most organized place... and people who went there ten years ago say it was the same then...

Thank you for the clinical, parking and uniform info. I'm sure the school will get around to providing this information, but knowing some of this now is really helpful, especially the clinical information.

It shouldn't be a problem most of the time, but my husband is in the army and sometimes he is away from home, he's actually out of town now, and since this isn't where any of my other family or close friends live, finding that early morning babysitter will be a little more challenging. So it's good to have this extra time to work out the details.

clhRN2b2010, this sounds pretty much like what they said at the info session I went to earlier this year. Not much information about clinicals, but they did emphasize the essay. I took heed and put a lot of work into it, and I think it paid off. The hardest part was trying to fit everything into 2 pages or less. Took me about a week to edit it down :chuckle.
