Anyone here that is a current or former Psychiatric RN at UCLA Medical Center? I am debating trying to make a move into Psych Nursing and would love some first hand input.
History: I am a fairly new grad, graduated in 2010 with a BSN, worked on the floor for just under a year in a general medical ward with a dedicated Psych Quad where we treated 5150s, fresh suicide attempts, and other medically unstable psych patients. I then moved to the OR but but discovered it wasn't the best match for me. I am currently working at UCLA in an administrative capacity but am finding that I really miss working with patients. For various reasons, I do not want to return to a medical/surgical floor or the OR.
I would love to speak with RNs who have experience here at UCLA because I want to stay here.
Thanks!

Hi! I too will be joining the Psych department at UCLA med center.. ME excited! .. with mixed feelings!
I have no insights yet but just curious how has your experience been so far? How long have you been in the department? I will see you soon !
Hey, I wanted to keep in touch with you because as I mentioned in the original post, I don't work at NPI at RRUMC. I work at the school of medicine, am a nurse, but currently working as an administrative assistant. When do you start there? I'd love to chat with you once you get started.

I have a buddy who works psych at UCLA. Not sure whether he is on this system, but I will ask him to have a look at this thread and offer his input.
Orca,
Thank you so much, that would be amazing!

Ha! Bet you won't believe this but I worked on 2south from 7/68 to 1/69. My mom started working on 2west when the place opened in 1959. Obviously I can be of no help, but it was a great first job. Still psych nursing at the state hospital in Pueblo, CO.
Good to hear that you're still in Psych. I'm really going to try to get some experience, maybe volunteering somewhere because that seems to be such a barrier to moving into psych. The hospital that I did my new grad program at didn't let you even choose psych as an option.
