Any Tampa VA Hospital nurses?

Published

Hi,

I was curious to know if anyone has works for, or know someone that works for the VA Hospital in Tampa. If so, can someone let me know what they think of the facility.....decent patient ratios, good financial assistance for furthering your education, location of the hospital....that kind of stuff

Thanks,

The Tampa VA hospital is the only VA hospital in the country that has achieved Magnet Status through the ANCC. From what I have heard, it is a decent hospital to work at and there nurse to patient ratio must be fair or they would not have achieved Magnet status.

I use to work for the VA in NC and it was a decent place to work. You really can't beat the federal benefits as well as time off that the VA offers. Most VA hospitals have a competitive compensation package. If you are interested in a VA career, I would certainly encourage you to explore the Tampa VA. Also, might bel helpful for you to post a message under the Military and Government Employed Nursing Forums.

Good luck.

Thanks Pat,

I had spoke with someone who worked in HR there a few days ago (albeit, they were not the Nurse Recruiter). They told me there training for a new grad LPN was three weeks long (on the floor was only one week). This unnerved me....I guess I'll have to call back and talk to the Nurse Recruiter.

I can tell you from personal experience that the information you received was incorrect. Quite the contrary! Most VA hospitals offer a long internship for new graduates, at least 12 weeks. They do a very nice job transitioning students into practice. I am certain that you would get much more training than 3 weeks. Heck, the general and nursing orientation alone is 2 weeks.

Please do call the nurse recruiter so you can get some accurate information and good luck with your career search with the VA.

I was on my hospital No Lift team last year and we visited the Tampa VA because it is a No Lift hospital. It is gorgeous (at least the new rehab part). THe people are very friendly and nice and you will find the nicest patients among the vet population. I've worked at the VA in Indianapolis and I've also worked overseas at military hospitals - absolutely loved it!

Thank goodness!!! The VA sounds like a good opportunity....I'm glad their orientation is longer than what one person told me.
