Any suggestions for props for a presentation?

Hello,

I was hoping I might receive suggestions/prop ideas, for a presentation I'm going to be doing. On the 19th I will be making a career power-point presentation about NICU nursing. I'd like to have props or something to pass around while I present, so that it's not just another pp presentation. We've been doing several each class period for the past couple weeks, and a lot of people are starting to dread that period of the class, because they've mostly been kinda of boring, lecture-type presentations. I want people to have an interest and learn something during my presentation, and to remember how great NICU nurses, and all other nurses are, in general.

So far, I've thought of filling a fabric pouch with something to demonstrate various weights--to give an example of what a micro-preemie, preemie, or average birth-weight newborn might weigh.

Any other suggestions?

I appreciate any and all input I get.

Thanks.:loveya:

Pass around a micro-preemie diaper and a size 2 blood pressure cuff.

A little 2.0 or 2.5 ET tube is impressive to nurses who work with adults. I remember freaking out when I saw how huge the adult size ET tubes are!! The tiniest B/P cuff we have is a size 1. It would be nice to show the different sizes of cuffs and ET tubes to show the different sizes of babies. The tiny diapers (you know, the ones that look like adult pantiliners LOL) would be cool too, especially when compared to regular preemie, newborn and then size 1 or 2 infant diapers. The 24 gauge IV catheters are very small compared to the 20 gauge most adults are cannulated with... You could make a tiny nest made of blankets and put a tiny doll in it and attach CR monitor leads to it, a pulse oximetry probe, a servo temp probe, some preemie phototherapy eye patches, a PIV taped to it and maybe some pretend UAC/UVC lines and have it sitting somewhere in the room. The Grad-U-Feed bottles with a super tiny preemie nipple sitting next to a regular infant bottle parents use at home would be another idea.

I congratulate you on trying to make your presentation as interesting as you can. I remember reading once that someone very important to teaching (like Socrates or Aristotle or someone like that) said something like, "Teaching is 30% content and 70% theatrics." I believe this is true because to me when learning is fun I retain it sooooo much more! Good luck to you!!!

I don't know where you are in FL, but I'm in the Orlando area. If you need any of the suggested items-bp cuffs and diapers-I could get them to you if you're close by. Let me know! :)

I put a pic of a micropreemie in my presentation (with parent's permission) and brought in items seen in the photo to show scale. People were stunned to see the huge syringe in the pic that was bigger than her leg was a 10cc and the enormous paci was a wee soothie, the 1 bp cuff wrapped around her leg twice and the loose diaper could fit in the palm of your hand. It was stunning and made quite an impression.

I bet your presentation did make quite the impression. I hope to do the same. Your presentation sounds like it was great. Thanks for the input, everyone.
