Has anyone attended Northwestern Institute of Health and Technology in Chicago? If so, can you tell me a little about the LPN program.

With the city colleges' long wait list, I'm looking into Brown Mackie or Northwestern Institute of Health and Technology. Once I receive my RN license, I plan to study for MSN-NP. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the update.

Hi there! I'm new to the site and have been reading a lot of these posts for hours for the past few days! I am going to speak with an admissions advisor at Northwestern Institute of Health and Technology tomorrow about the LPN program. I was also looking into Kennedy King's LPN program. I spoke with somebody about it in their nursing dept over the phone just a few minutes ago and asked about the pre-reqs and she didn't say anything about Chemistry or Microbiology. Are those only prereqs for the LPN-RN program? I have A&P 1 and 2 along with Gross Anatomy Lab 1&2 and also Kiniseology(sp?) as well as several other classes, but have not taken Chemistry. I wanted to apply for the January 2010 start date at KKC but if you need Chem I don't think I would be able to. Also, I'm no longer a CNA as my licensure lapsed back in 2001ish. I would much rather go to KKC simply because of the cost. I'm a single gal and I really don't qualify for any assistance (make to much money to get help, but barely enough to survive! Ha!) Anybody applying in Sept. for KKC's January start date? Anyone going to NIHT? Does anybody have any pearls of wisdom they could share with me, or is there anybody out there in the same place that I am right now?

PS-Nice to meet you all!!! :clown:

RaeMae,

You CAN start the LPN program at KKC in January, 2010...you do not need Chemistry. You will have to take the TEAS exam which may take place this month (double check).

Northwestern Institute of Health and Technology is a 14 months (morning classes starting in October, 2009) or 17 months (evening classes starting in November, 2009). You can also apply for WIA which will cover $8000 of the $17,500 - 18,000 tuition. I will be going to NWIHT this week to have them complete my WIA Training Provider Form. I know a young lady who is attending the program and she really enjoys it.

Hi! Thanks for the info! I just spoke with Amy at NWIHT yesterday and she was really helpful! My only concern was the cost and the fact that you can only get loans through Sallie Mae. I believe the program at KKC is less expensive and you can get gov't loans. Do you know if KKC requires you to be a CNA to get in? I know NW does and I am thinking about starting that on Sept. 21. How long does it take to get the WIA grant? And do they have any other times that you can go for oriendations besides MTWTh from 9:15-10:15? I lost my job a couple months ago and then I would not have qualified for it because I made more than 11K/year, but it has been impossible to find work lately and I'm starting a temp job Monday but it only lasts until the beginning of Dec. Do they base your income on the prior tax year or your current situations? (sorry for so many questions, I'm just feeling overwhelmed with all of this!)

Thanks again for the info and any help!!!

How long does it take to get the WIA grant? It depends on who your career counselor is, what their attitude is toward you and your goals, if you have a background, etc. It really should take at minimum 2-3 weeks to go to WIA orientation, speak with intake counselor, meet career counselor, attend, job workshop (resume writing and interviewing skills), meet with career counselor AGAIN, submit training providers exploration form, meet with career counselor AGAIN and have $5k - 8K voucher processed at the school of your choice. You MUST be accepted in to the LPN or RN program however NOT yet started the program. Double check with your career counselor because it appears rules differentiate among schools and career counselors.

And do they have any other times that you can go for oriendations besides MTWTh from 9:15-10:15? I'm not sure about this question.

Do they base your income on the prior tax year or your current situations? WIA is only based on low income which consist of less than $30K for a single person (I believe), dislocated adult workers, and there's a youth portion of the program. You would fall into low income.

I've been dealing with WIA for the past 6 months and they are giving me a HORRIBLE time in obtaining a voucher. I wish I wouldn't have told them I had a Master's degree because they look at me as if, "what are you doing here?"

I just read an article in reference to WIA office philosophy to make vocher approval difficult for 1) difficult to place workers, 2) low to border line illiterate individuals and 3) individuals with a less than desirable background (ex-convicts). Best wishes.
