Any "snow birds" out there???

Hi! All!

Considering becoming a "snow bird" from MA to FL in winter.

Main specialty is detox and psych. Are there any places that accept short term placement during the winter?

Can't do clinical nursing any more due to some health problems. Any other specialties that might be more conducive to a "seasoned" RN?:nurse:

Any ideas/help would be much appreciated.

Yes, we have a lot of parttime positions open in the winter months because our population swells with tourists from all over the globe.

You might try online searches of facilities in the area you'd like to move to.

Don't buy anywhere in a flood zone or is prone to sinkholes; our insurance rates are enormous this year. One family was on the news last week because their modest home's insurance had skyrocketed to $6000 per year.

Charlie Crist, the new governor, is supposed to do something about it, but right now the market is soft in Florida because of the insurance rates.

That means increases in rental prices as well, if you're not planning on buying.

So just caveat emptor! and best wishes!

I agree... think twice about where you end up buying.

The coasts are where a lot of the insurance increases are taking place because the coast takes direct hits during hurricanes.

I am in Orlando and not in a flood zone.... my house insurance is $1,100/year....

I'm in jacksonville, FL, and here are a few places you may want to look into (though I don't know about temporary placements, it may be worth it to call. We are in northern Florida, so we don't have the tourist season that south florida and Orlando experience).

Ten Broeck Hospital: Offers Inpatient, and Partial Hospitalization. Private hospital.

Wekiva Springs: Addictions, including eating disorders. To my knowledge, inpatient only. Private Hospital.

Mental Health Resource Center: Inpatient psych and, I think, addictions. community hospital.

River Region Human Services: To my knowledge, only addictions. community hospital.

I'm sure there are more, but these are the first ones that came to mind.

Found out today that my friend may let me stay with her for 2-3 months, and let me take my dog,:paw: next winter. She lives in Daytona area.

Guess I'll apply for reciprocity license and get the new required contact hours.

I was thinking about moving to Florida. I am an RN in Massachusetts, what do I have to do to transfer my license to Florida?

They require more contact hours than MA (25) and they must include : Domestic Violence, HIV/AIDS and Prevention of Medical Errors.
