Just wondering if there are any of you on here who are Psych Home Health RN's... I am looking into the field. Job interview in a few days...

I haven't worked in home health- only in the hospital setting- ever, so this will be a BIG change.

Experiences anyone???

Thx!

I haven't done any Psych Home health since 1998, so my answer is based on some dated experience:

As I remember, the Nursing visit entailed a report of a reality-based status and medication compliance. Med training and setup also took place. Any medical or other pertinent issues where addressed and decanoate injections given. Doctors were contacted PRN for areas of concern.

That's about all I can remember on the details of the visit. Good luck in your interview, carriegrn.

I've done it, and liked it fairly enough, but I stopped doing it all the time due to money and computer paperwork necessary eating my time up. I felt like I was working for $10 per hour when it was said and done. But the hours are much better than hospital. Also it can get creepy sometimes if you are alone with a psychotic or intoxicated patient.

I did it for many years. I was fortunate to earn the same salary and benefits as an inpatient nurses.

It was a great experience to see how people live their lives after leaving the hospitals. The patients were now in their own autonomous environments and we were now guests in their homes and they could accept or refuse our teaching as they saw fit. But the independence and autonomy compared to working inpatient was amazing. Our primary goals was education, medication compliance, emotional support to the patient and family, and to decrease rehospitalizations.

One of the best jobs I ever had.
