I currently work in an outpatient setting and make a tad bit more than bedside nursing. Big difference is the hours - I went from 3 X 12hr shifts / week to a 5 weekday schedule. Sometimes we go home early once cases are done but not too often. I'm also on call 1 weekend per month and one week night every two weeks.
What outpatient setting are you thinking of getting into? Are you a brand new nurse or experienced nurse?
I am doing Interventional Radiology. I love getting off work at a decent hour and all my body aches that I had in bedside nursing are gone. It's been a struggle though being at work so many days and off only 2 when I was used to having 4 days off on a full time schedule. Hope this kinda helps.
I have scads of ambulatory nurses who work in my clinics. Every single one of them left the inpatient setting for quality of life issues, primarily to get predictable daytime shifts for raising children or personal life. Our pay is competitive with a daytime medsurg nurse position at the local hospitals. We do not compete with shift differentials or specialty units like ICU, the OR, etc.

Anyone working in outpatient? Can you tell me if the pay is adequate for the cost of living? I see that most of the posts are about acute care; new RNs willing to take CNA and secretary pay to get their foot in the door, which leads me to believe that that's where the money is. I'm not looking for the highest paying position; I'm just looking to be able to survive with a good work life balance. Thanks for any responses!
