Any online Pharm and Pathophysio classes for ABSN at Samuel Merritt College?

Dear all,

I want to apply to Samuel Merritt College for their ABSN program, and I need to take pharmacology and pathophysiology classes. I have a fulltime job; and no college nearby offer these during the evening.

Have any of you taken these classes online? Any recommendations?

Thanks so much!!

Hello!

I applied for Samuel Merritt's ABSN in Oakland, CA Nov. 1st, 2008. I should find out late Feb 2009 whether I was accepted or not.

I took Pharmacology at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. It was a "hybrid" class, meaning you only go in once a month (4 times total) to take an exam. However, you are welcome to go in for the weekly lecture if you want to to, but its not required. It is all self-study with power points. I learned a lot and would take the class again.

I took Pathophysiology at Moorepark college online. There was a lot of required reading, however if you complete all required weekly assignments, you will do just fine. My teacher was Linda Loiselle. The class seems intimidating at first, but the teacher realizes it takes a few weeks to adjust to the online format and is flexible with due dates and assignments in the beginning until everyone is on the same page. I would take it again!

Good luck to all Samuel Merritt ABSN applicants, I hope to be in class with some of you this summer of 2009!

I highly recommend taking pharm at santa barbara city college online.

I took both classes at Santa Barbara city college and got accepted to the oakland summer 09 program.I really don't feel like I have remembered much from these classes. Since they are required I am very worried on what we are to "know". Anyone been in the program that can comment on that? I can't imagine that they would think that we would know all those drugs. I just read a story where a new nurse grad killed someone by giving too much of a certain medicine. This scares me to death!!!

Yea, I took Pharm at Santa Barbara city college and felt hat I didnt get a lot out of it. I spoke with a few nurses about this concern and they say that when you get into your department or specialize you'll only have about 20 drugs that you need to memorize. She said she always triple checks the meds and they always have books around to double check the perscription.

I am thinking of taking Pharm this summer online through Santa Barbara City College. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as what instructor to take it with? There are three teaching Pharm this summer. Thanks!

Melissa

hey blkgrlwithwings i was wondering who you had for patho at sbcc. i am registering now and there are 3 teachers. who do you suggest? slaughter, turner howe, or lurie? thanks!!

I am finishing up SBCC's online Patho (Slaughter) and Pharm (Lurie). I was able to register pretty easily; they have quite a few sections of each. The Pharm course is almost too introductory; almost like a health science course.

Patho with Dr. Slaughter is great; he's no-nonsense, just the facts, with a little dry humor thrown in.

Note: these courses are part of their Health Information Technology program; NOT through their Nursing curriculum.

Does anyone else think it's weird that a nursing school would allow these two VERY important foundation nursing courses to be taken online?

YEs! I DO think it is weird that these classes can be taken on line...I chose to not take pathophysiology on line...and now that I am in a face to face lecture class recording all the lectures and listening to them over and over and then going to the discussion portion...well, I can not EVEN imagine trying to take all the info in through an on line course. Maybe it is just me and how I learn...the amount of info is amazing and I want to have a good foundation so I am glad I chose this route.

I'm very curious about how SMC reinforces what students 'learn' in online Patho and Pharm courses. As a patient being treated by a nurse, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable knowing my nurse took these classes online...!:thnkg:

Hi, I'm in the same boat this year...need to take Patho and Pharm for SMU's ABSN. Does anyone know any feedback about taking it at SMU? I'm registered but looking for a cheaper alternative. Checking out SBCC but according to Ratemyprofessors, teachers don't look too helpful.

I took Pharm at Barstow CC and Patho at Moorpark CC.

U Nebraska and Samuel Merritt are great ways to take these classes if you can. Some of the community colleges are so geared toward their currently enrolled students or program participants that they are hard to get into and hard to get onboard with even though they are online. If you do take them call their bookstores and make sure you order your books very early. Also make sure you clear all of the administrative hurdles: clear prereqs with transcripts or get dropped at the last minute, email instructors to express your commitment to remain in the course on the first day or be dropped, pay your fees immediately or be dropped, etc.

I got dropped from 2 courses after getting "in". Be thorough and persistent! Good luck, folks!
