Being burned out after years as an insurance claims adjuster, I hope to start a new career in nursing. Since I'm not a youngster (even though I feel like one), I'm wanting to get out as quickly as possible. I have a BA from years ago, with B's in English and Psychology. I'm going to take Psych over inorder to get an A. I just finnished A&PI and Growth & Dev with A's, but I'm worried about the Hesi. I plan to apply to several colleges as I hear nursing is highly competive.
I will be taking the Hesi for Cyfair in a week or so and now find out that Houston CC is just starting the Hesi requirment for the Aug. application deadline. I know Cyfair test only on Math and English. HCC is testing on not only Math and English, but also Grammer and A&P. How long are the passages that are being tested on? The sample in the Hesi quide is not very long, but passages in the Net, GRE, and othe critical reading study guides are quite long. Any info. greatly appreciated-getting nots in my stomach. Also, does anyone know how the Hesi will enter in to the points scoring system they use to qualify applicants. Helppp---------Mccordd

Sorry, no help on the Hesi. I'm just getting started myself. But I was wondering you are in pursuit of a getting your ADN?
Why am I getting my ADN. I will eventually get my Bachelors in nursing, but I would need to take quite a few more courses right now and I want to get my foot in the door with the ADN. I my major was in Social Welfare, which I used for a year immediately after graduation as a child protective case worker. Back then I was really naive and had been raised pretty sheltered. I wanted to help people, but found I was considered a intrusion to peoples life. My life was threatened, I was chased after by family members who wanted me out of their life. I was too young and naive at that time to handle it and went into the insurance industry. I was totally burned out after 18years, trying to please the insurance agent, the company(holding claim amounts down) and people who thought insurance companies just screw people. I've sent many resumes out in the social services arena, but not much luck since I don't have a masters and have been out of that industry for so long. The money isn't great either. I want to help people, enjoy my time I get to work with people, and work with people who in a positive manner and not a negative one. I left a career at $54,000.00 to enter a profession at $32,000+. It may sound crazy, but money isn't everything. My daughter is a nurse and thinks it's the best thing she ever did. Call me Crazy...

I applied to North Harris, Tomball, and Montgomery colleges which are in the same college district as Cyfair college (NHMCCD colleges). I took the hesi entrance exam and can say that it was fairly easy. The math portion is just basic math. The reading comprehension part was more difficult but as long as you take your time you will do fine. I'm not sure about Cyfair, but the rest of the colleges score on a point system as follows:
-4 pts. max total for your GPA of Eng., A&P, and gen. psych.
-4 pts. max total for the total # of credits completed for the non-nursing classes ex.- 27-31 hrs = 4 pts
23-26 hrs = 3 pts ect....
-4 pts. total for the pre-entrance HESI
They take the reading score of the hesi and divide by 25.
I will use my score as an example:
-Average GPA 4 pts.
-Total # of credits complete (31) 4 pts.
-Score of Hesi 3.7448 pts.
Total score (out of 12 max.) 11.7448 pts.
I scored a 92 on the math which they don't look at bc people usually score high on it (i didn't bc i was running out of time; spent too much time on the reading section; only had 25 mins. to complete 50 questions; there is a 2 hr. time limit for the entire test).
The reading i scored a 93.62; i missed 3 questions.....they took the 93.62 divided by 25 which = the 11.7448.
I was accepted at Montgomery college. I went to the nursing program orientation about 2 wks. ago and they said the cut off score for acceptance district wide was 11.1 for 170 slots total (N. Harris, tomball, and mont. colleges that is)
Good luck and i hope i have help you

I perfectly understand where you are coming from. I have a Bachelors and a Masters and now, I am school getting my prereqs to go into nursing. Seems to be the most secure and fulfilling job around.
About the Hesi, I really don't know what its all about. Cyfair college has not made it a prereq to getting into the ADN program, but HCC has and it is a prereq to doing pharmacology. Very discouraging. At the Infor Session two weeks ago, we were told if we fail the Hesi, we can not take it until after three months. Wish I knew why all this is going on, when I hear Nursing are in high demand. Is it a calculated attempt to frustrate us?
I appreciate the responses. Sounds like there's alot of heavy competition out there and alot of great nurses coming up the ranks. kudos on the grades and good luck to you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
