Hello everyone, I have an upcoming interview for an insurance company. I was wondering if any of you have worked for insurance companies and what your role was, what type of things were asked in the interview, etc. Also, if why I want to leave bedside nursing comes up just how honest should I be? (Because I despise it!) Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Don't badmouth your previous employer; it looks bad. Something to the effect of "I wanted a change in career direction" would be fine. Be honest, but emphasize the positives.

I did utilization review for an insurance company Basically reviewed charts and determined if pt fit the criteria for hospital level of care. I also authorized rehabs, nursing home placements, etc. Mention you wanted to experience a different aspect of nursing. They'll ask you questions re: clinical experience and "typical" interview questione is conflict resolutions, weaknesses/strengths. You are a strong candidate if youv'e had recent acute clinical experience or UR/case mgt experince. GOOD LUCK!

My daughter has worked as a cardiac nurse for years, from adult to peds. She then move on to work with onnicology for peds. After doing years of direct pt. care she needed a break and moved on to work for BCBS. Her years of experience gave her the background she needed and the job gives her the break she needed from that very thing. What she told me about this change was that nurses with a strong back grond in pt care are better prepared to determine a pts. real needs. She enjoys her work. This is why I think we should tell all nursing students who question their path. Go for it, the fields and possibilities are amazing.

I worked in bedside nursing for 7 years. I was lucky enough to have a friend at the hospital who had moved on to the insurance arena. She helped me get my foot in the door and never looked back. I have worked in numerous insurance companies in my area for the last 17 years. I am now with the best insurance company run by a university with a conglomerate of hospitals. I have a 100% company sponsored pension plan, as well as a 401k. I plan to stay here till I am ready to retire. Some insurance companies are better than others. You will just have to try and see. But once you get into it you will find out which companies are good and which are bad. And once you get your foot in the door, it is easy to change companies due to the experience you have.
The best part about a job like this:
no scrubs, wear regular, pretty clothes,no worries about getting splashed with blood and other bodily fluids,
nobody dies because of what you do
Steady daylight, weekends and holidays off
Pay can be pretty good for what you do.
It is easy, less stressful than the hospital
What did I say was the reason I left the hospital? Too much stress, and I was burned out! The interviewer laughed and said she hears that all the time!
Good luck. I think it is a great job. Some in the "trenches" don't like it, they say it is against their beliefs or whatever, but for me it has worked great!
Thanks for all the replies!

have you worked for BCBS, what are your thoughts? I am interviewing this week. I have lots of Cm experience in acute, LTC,home health and hospice, but have heard some negatives about BCBS
I always go into something with an open mind, but it helps to know ahead of time if there are shining issues with a company.
