Any nurses come to the hospital from a different setting? (SNF, clinic, etc)

Specializes in SICU.

I'm a new grad RN since August (previous lpn for little under a year). I've been working in the SICU since October and I have to say I'm not super in love. After coming from a SNF/LTC, it's a different world. Not as fast paced as I'd like, although I do prefer the higher acuity and love the critical environment. The work is easy enough and every day it gets a little easier (my assessment, understanding the patho/disease process, communicating with the MD & team) but I'm not super excited to come to work. Everyone on the unit is nice and my preceptor and manager are wonderful. But I don't feel passionate about it. Just sucks because I feel I've worked so hard to get here and now this. I want to stick it out but im thinking of traveling and maybe revisiting the hospital setting later on down the line. Any nurses come to the hospital after being in LTC or any other outpatient setting?? How did you guys adjust?! Should I stay and give it more time?

Here in same boat, thinking about sticking or calling it a day. Unlike you, staff are not that welcoming, lots of eye rolling..... even preceptor not that supportive. I love the challenge, the acuity, I have learned so much. Unfortunately I had 3 offer took the less paying for sake of learning but the culture is not working. It adds to the stress. So at this point don't know what to do.

Specializes in Cardiac.

As an ol' LTC LPN turned bedside RN, I can say it is a huge adjustment. However I love the new roll. I started on a cardiac med-surg floor and have transitioned into ICU/CVICU in less than a year. Both LTC and hospital settings have their pros and cons, at times I would say to myself that I'm not cut out for this, and think I'd be better off returning to LTC, however that was because LTC was easy, it was what I had always known.  So I had to push myself out of that comfort zone in order to learn new things, and move up.  I love what I do now, and would never go back to LTC except on a PRN basis. Happy travels!
