Anyone working on their prerequisites for the Marian University Accelerated BSN program? I am working towards Fall 2011 and am very excited!
The tests were not too bad, but I did study quite a bit. You definitely have to know the material to do well. Anatomy is something that you are going to need to have a good grasp of in physiology and nursing classes. I got an A in Anatomy and in Chemistry. I am in my first semester at Marian and no you do not need to take the TEAS exam. Taking the online classes will help you get ready for the online courses in the Marian program. They are a little different as the nursing classes really emphasize application so you get used to thinking a different way for the NCLEX. So the tests are a little more difficult for the nursing program. I am still at the beginning so I'm sure it will still get a bit harder but it is doable if you put your mind to it.
I work full-time and have 2 kids so I'm hoping I can find all the time I need to study. Seems like you're doing pretty well in the program and that you are doing well by making As in your prereqs. Have you started clinicals? From what I calculated the program costs about 49k. I will have to quit my job when I start the program and look into private student loans, which I really dread doing.
I start clinicals in a couple of weeks. I was able to get some money through FASFA you may be able to too. I was able to quit my job in January to concentrate on prereqs so that helped. I took 22 credit hours in the spring and 17 this summer. It was a lot of work but doable. I have a two year old son but he has remained in daycare so I can study during the day. My husband travels quite a bit so I definitely needed the time during the day to get homework done.
I was informed that since I already have a bachelors I do not qualify for financial aid and that I have to get loans. I will have maxed out my federal stafford loans so I have to apply for private loans. The financial aid office said that's my only other option. Were you able to receive financial assistance? My plan is to quit my job in January. I will be taking micro and stats and I want to be able to focus soley on those courses considering I've never taken them before. I also plan on applying to the program that starts in May 2012. I'll find out this semester how I can juggle my already hectic lifestyle and school. Most importantly I want to pass the 2 courses I'm taking with A's.
Are you excited about clinicals? How many students are in your cohort?
I was able to get some financial assistance, but may still need to get some private loans further on in the program. We start clinicals in two weeks. It should be fun. There are approximately 65 students in my class right now. We are the biggest class so far. The one before us, I believe is around 25. We don't think all 65 will make it through the first semester. Almost every cohort has lost people throughout the program.
I hope they've been a lot better organized for your cohort than ours. Also, don't listen to a single thing one particular 210 instructor says...you should easily figure out that she doesn't have a clue. It's an embarrassment that she was even brought back after she was replaced halfway into our clinical rotation for critical care.
For one clinical group, she was more than 90 minutes late for 2 of the 3 weeks, not to mention committing med errors and just being an overall idiot.
Hi, I just finished the Micro class at Marian. It was very time consuming, but super interesting. I am only working part time, was taking a non-accelerated statistics course at the same time, and spent a ton of time on Micro. The professor is awesome! I recommend organizing a few labs at once so you can run them during the same time period and finish sooner. I also recommend buying a printout of the book vs. reading the online book. The tests are open book and many of the test questions are right from the text and a lot easier to find if you are holding a physical copy of the book (during a test). I got an A, but it just about killed me. The test study guides are super helpful and so are flash cards. Good luck!!!
I am wondering if I could get more info on what it is like to do the nursing program online through Marian. how much time do you spend on studying per week, is there room for a part time job and not to feel too overwhelmed? I am single, 22, and need a part time job while in college!!!
Thanks so much for the info!
I just finished my first semester and this week just started my second. It is definitely possible to have a part time job, but you will probably feel overwhelmed even if you were not working. The first semester of nursing school is tough because you are learning a whole new way of thinking. There are a few people that are working full time jobs. The first semester you will have the majority of your exams on Monday and then when clinicals begin that will be either Tuesday/Wednesday or Thursday/Friday. You will be studying a lot and listening to hours of lecture. I would say that you are spending about 20 to 30 hours a week on class stuff. Depending on the week and that is not including clinicals. You will also meet a lot of people and you can form study groups which can be beneficial. Best of luck! It is worth it.

Thanks for all your insight. Are there any pointers that you can give me about the chem and anatomy that you took thru Marian? How difficult are the tests? So are you already enrolled in the nursing program? I hear of a TEAS exam. Marian doesn't require that for admissions do they?
