My husband and I have decided that I need to work the night shift because we just can't make ends meet right now IF we pay for daycare. We plan on working on that problem.. anyway...
I plan on finding a job in LTC or assisted living..
Did any of you get a baylor shift job right out of school after passing your exam? If not, did you opt for 12 hr shifts during other days? Is that even available in LTC settings?
Any of you go straight to nights working the typical 11-7?
How was/is it? When do you sleep? How do you get in family time?:uhoh21: Any ideas/tricks you can throw my way about working nights? Thanks!

I preferr the night shifts. It seems easier on your body to do 12 hour shifts at night.I think it is because the stress level is a little less. You do need to invest in one of those little machines that play soothing sounds (ocean, rain, ect) or a fan.If you can keep the day time noises out of your bedroom your body gets used to working nights and sleeping days in about 3-4 days. The perks of night shifts to me or that there is the shift differental and having the time to take care of personal buiness and still not have to take a day off work to do it. One of my classmates who had never worked nights before took on a night shift for the first time last week and now that is the shift she is tring to get perminately.
hope this helps'

Will you be working NOC Shift and taking care of your children during the day?
Personally i liked 7pm to 7 am you have a nice calming in the middle of your shift, (most of the time). Noc shift in the LTC isn't that bad i did it for a year before i got into the transition program, the biggest problem is that people don't get that when they were sleeping last noc you were working and you need to sleep. THe 12 hour shift help with being away from your family b/c you generally have 4 days off a week, try to get your shifts in a row so your days off can be that way too. OTherwise, it gets hard to sleep with on a day off a day. As far as LTC and 12 hour shifts that depends on the facility and how they prefer to staff. Some say only if you find a partner to cover your other 12 hours some say no and others love 12 hour people so that iwll vary. Good Luck, you will be fine. It will take about two weeks to a month to get yourself adjusted.

How old are your kids? I worked nights (10p-6a) for 6 months when I finished LVN school. My kids were 7 & 9 at the time. I usually was home by 730am - just in time to see them before they left for school. I would eat some breakfast than head to bed around 830-9am. I slept till bout 4p, kids usually came home from school around 315p.
I have a newborn! My husband owns his own company so he can make his own hours *but* he does need to get certain times/hours in during the week! This is how we are able to accomodate the night shift schedule. Most days, he won't go to work until 1-2pm so I have time to sleep when I get home. Some days he needs to go in at 9am so I'll have to take a power nap to watch the baby until he gets home around dinner.. I know it will be tough but it's the only thing we can afford to do right now (are mortgage went up dramatically with the economy)
