Was wondering if there are any school nurses in inner city, or high immigrant population cities that would like to share... What is your typical day like? What problems do you deal with that aren't typically seen in the suburbs (teen pregnancy, drug use, fights, abuse/neglect?) What do you love/hate about your job? What is most challenging/rewarding?
Thanks :)

I work in what what be considered an inner city school. We have a mixed population of some middle class students and a good number of lower income families. I've seen teen pregnancy, drug use, fights, and abuse/neglect. I've also seen death of a student's family member due to an act of violence.
We have a school counselor that is wonderful and I work with. I'm still learning the best way to help students, but to be honest, every student and every student's situation is different, so I feel I will always be learning new ways I can help. I'm reaching into the community to find resources such as free teen health clinics for pregnancy, STI, contraception options, and relationship issues.
Some days I do feel sad, but honestly, I love the kids I work with. Several of them are the first of their family to get into college and that is hugely rewarding.
