I was wondering if there were any Houston Nurses here.
1. Where did you go to school?
2. How much was your starting salary right out of school?
3. Where are you currently working? Er/NICU/home health care??

Well, I was a Houston nurse. I graduated from TWU in '78. I have no recall what so ever of what my first salary was. I worked ICU at St. Luke's and Methodist but the majority of my time was spent in the ED at Ben Taub, I job that I LOVED. I live in Seattle and am semi retired, working charge on a med surg floor, having retired from the upper management headaches. What are you doing? Where are you working? What are your plans?
im a nursing student att hcc, and its so strange that you live in seattle.. cuz im thinking of moving there!!
How much do nurses make over there? I hear they make way more than they do in houston
Im pursuing the adn program by the way

Houston nurse - checking in!
I graduated from UT (San Antonio) back when the earth's crust was still cooling. Moved to Houston in '83 and my MSN is from UT Houston.
Can't even remember my starting salary - long ago and far away. I started in a Neuro/trauma ICU in a county facility and do remember how wonderful it felt to finally be an RN - working in an area I absolutely loved! I'm currently in an education leadership role. Still LOVE nursing.
Spacecity- the grass is NOT greener in the Pacific NW. Very few jobs for new grads. Be sure to get some experience in one of our "still new grad friendly" Houston facilities before setting out for parts unknown!
It depends on where you work. I have no idea what nurses start at here because having been a nurse for so long, I am at the top of my pay grade where ever I work. Seattle is a nice place to live but living IN Seattle is expensive. A lot of nurses live in areas around Seattle and commute. We have a good commuting system here so you would not have to drive your car.
In Seattle, the major hospitals are University Hospital, Children's Hospital, Harborview (all are part of the university system and you can pull them all up at the same time on the web, Swedish Hospital, Virginia Mason and the VA.
There are a lot of hospitals in the outlying areas but email me privately to get information about them. We live in a small community 15 minutes north of Seattle. I work in a community hospital 7 minutes from my house. My husband works in the Neuro ICU at Harborview.
You might have better luck getting a job in Houston as a new grad. Things are tight up here right now. The Harris County Hospital District almost always has openings. There are two hospitals, Ben Taub and LBJ plus 11 community clinics. They are all part of the Harris County Hospital District group. If you look on the web site they will have all the openings. But to get a job there you have to be PERSISTANT. They move as slow as a turtle. But you will get great experience there.
Keep me posted. Diane
