Any hints for coordinating a practical nursing lab?

I'm a new instructor who got put in charge of teaching the lab. I'm very excited about it, but I have no idea as to what I'm doing coordinating/paperwork wise. Looking for any suggestions, ideas, links, etc. Please help!

What level is your program (RN, LPN/LVN, NA)? What procedures are students required to complete for in the module? What are the objectives?

It is a new part-time LPN adult evening program that will take about two years to complete. The lab is scheduled twice a week. The enrollment so far is approx. 41 students. The students will be divided into four groups. Each group is allotted 1 hour and five min per class day. The procedures required include everything from giving a bath to placing NG tubes to starting IV's. The program isn't really divided into modules, it's more like "before going to clinicals in the nursing home" and after.

hello, mopnglo42,

when i set up my labs, i used the objectives written in the texts as a guideline. also, i used the practice booklets and tried to create a lab which reflected each objective. and, i tried to create a lab that looked like one i had in college as an rn. you can still utilize the same principle.

Check students' text for each procedure. Check with the school for procedures that have already been completed. "Do not reinvent the wheel."

As needed, write each procedure step by step. Determine the pass / fail criteria. Review procedures with students. Demonstrate each procedure & allow time for student to practice.

Schedule the skills lab day(s) so that students will know when they will be evaluated.
