Any guys here from Connecticut?

Nursing Students Male Students

I'm another one of those guys that has been in the IT field for 20 plus years and don't want to do another 20 years of it. I have been looking at this field because it has always been an interest to me. I always find myself watching the trauma shows, heh heh. Not to mention you can't send nursing overseas right? I'm constantly facing layoffs. After extensive research though it seems nearly impossible to get into a program these days. Average community colleges have about 400 applicants a year with 120 slots open? Plus the fact that I haven't been in any school in years, talk about pre reqs like Algebra? I couldn't add a fraction right now if my life depended on it. Sounds nearly impossible to get into this, at least in this state. Any comments/suggestions are welcome. Also if there is anyone in CT that would like to chat with me sometime that might help. Thanks.

I too was in the IT field but for just 2-3 years before i left it i couldnt handle the job instability, i am beginning my lpn program in Sept at NETI it is $28K thouhg  but i know it will be worth it. A friend of mine has just graduated fromt he same program last december and he is now making 32$ an hour working in hartford hospital and also doing per diem work. I am excited but nervous at the same time about the program.

The RN program at the community college is about 8 to 10k max for two years. 28k is a lot of cake. I'm finding it's near impossible to get accepted these days though.

there is also the adn program at goodwin college, and the cttech shcools have an lpn program

Pre-reqs are a ***** and time consuming; it seems like they will never end.

Bridgeport Hospital has a couple programs and they pretty much take anyone with a pulse. Naugatuck Valley CC is one of the best, but it is very very very competitive. Westconn and Central both have good programs (Central has a night program).

Goodwin is a good program but it is not worth the big money they want, you will either be stuck with big loans or a long commitment to a hospital for tuition forgiveness.

Figure about 2 years to finish up your pre-reqs (part-time) and then 2 years in the program for an Associates.

I know not everyone will agree with all of the above, but I have visited every program and talked to a lot of students.

Check out Gateway community college in New Haven area as they have an ADN program that actually looks very easy compared to the one I am attending in NH. Also credits are cheaper in CT than NH for comm colleges. Had I known this I may still be living down there!

I plan on relocating to CT once I am graduated and my youngest is off to college too!

Best of luck whatever you decide!

Hey there,

I am a nursing student at Norwalk Community College. It is important to remember that the G.P.A. you earn from those annoying prereq.'s are the main criteria faculty use to determine your acceptance. 400 people applied to norwalk's nursing program last fall, 100 were accepted= 25% chance, that's 1 in 4. Now... If you take 2 or 3 pre-reqs a semester, and work hard, you should be able to attain a decent GPA. Some students take too many classes before they can handle them; killing their GPA at the start. Chemistry, and A&P tend to be the toughies. If you work hard, composition and math are relatively easy A's.

When choosing a nursing program, check out the hospitals available for clinical rotation. Norwalk Community College (NCC) is a very reputable and challenging program. Clinical sites include; Norwalk Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Samford Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, Silver Hill, and more. So far I have heard that Naugatuck, Norwalk, Wesconn, and Quinipiac are top programs in Connecticut, but... It seems that most programs say they are the best. I know that Norwalk Consistantly does very well on the NCLEX, 100% pass rate in 2005. Wesconn also scored 100% pass rate in 2005.

Bottom line... If you work very hard, and get good grades (GPA 3.5 or higher) you shouldn't have a problem getting accepted to a program.

Bridgeport Hospital takes anyone huh? Anyone know if its hard to get in their program. I have a Degree from SCSU but struggled along the way. My last 3 semesters were great and i finished with a 2.7 GPA. Any suggestions people?

P.s I am an EMT and a Tech in their E.D. You think that will help a little?

It is great that you are tring to get in to school. Don't be discouraged about the prereqs. I am 9 months from finishing. It may seem like it takes forever but it goes fast.

Hey Bridgport & St. V's in Bridgport both have exelent Asociates programs. THe best part is if u work for them after they pay for everything. I have a few friends that were in IT, engeneering, Buisness, that all went in to nursing. It is competative but dive in its worth it. I graduate from a BSN in May and it is all worth it in the end.
