Looking To Move To Laredo
Hello all, I was hoping for some information and advice. My wife and I are looking to move to the Laredo area. Does anyone know the wages in the area for an ED nurse. What about housing and area hospitals. Any info on any area of life would be helpful. Thank you all very much, Oso

Attention Gaylord Focker...
Go ahead and make the switch. I am 34, just graduated and will begin working in a local ED soon. I have worked as an EMT and ER tech for the past 8 years and never once felt out of place among all the women.

Male nursing students can do assessments on the women?
I can truely appreciate your situation and questions. I have worked in a busy ER for six years and will grasduate in just 12 weeks (Woo Hoo). I have found that in all areas I have spent time, that being a male is not a problem. In fact I had one woman request me during my OB rotation. What ever happens don't let what others tell you hold you back. It will all be fine. Just a side note, there is only 5 males out of 80 students in my class, and I have found that my classmates have gone out of their way to make us comfortable, even during assessments.

Your Favorite one liner used with patients
After taking blood, "its impressive what this hospital will let the janitorial staff do".

Assault Response Training for ER Staff
The hospital I work at uses MOAB, we still restrain patients daily and staff still gets hurt.

ER newbie here, please give me some tips to meet my co-workers expectation
Congrats to starting in a wonderful place. I have worked in an ER for six years. I peice of advice I can give, make the techs your friend. They can make the transition even more difficult than it has to be if they fell that you are condecending to them. That being said they are there to take your direction and will expect it. Good luck, Oso

Is it possible to hold a p/t job while going to school f/t in nursing?
I have worked full time while attending school. You need to be extremely organized and have a good support system. I have found that you can do anything if you want it bad enough.

Any guys here from Connecticut?
It is great that you are tring to get in to school. Don't be discouraged about the prereqs. I am 9 months from finishing. It may seem like it takes forever but it goes fast.

Uniforms...
Some of you sound very lucky. We are stuck with white slack style pants and light blue polo shirts. They also want us to wear this navy blue jacket but they don't make any bigger than a large which has elastic cuffs and cuts off my circulation. It could be worse, some of the students in the same hospitals have to wear this white and pea green combonation, absolutly horrid.

allowed to go to other Community College for R.N. program
Almost all CC will except the classes from each other. I did all my pre and co req at Gateway and Middlesex, but I am now in the Nursing program at TRCC. It is allways a good idea to talk to the councelors from the school you wish to attend.

Anyone ever work full time while getting their RN?
IT CAN BE DONE!!!! I work full time nights in a busy ER and go to school days. I am married and am the only wage earner. Scheduling your time and keeping to it is key. Good Luck

Acceptance Envelope-Thick or Thin?
Sorry for not repling faster, one of the CT nursing journals had an article about the state of nursing in CT. This stat was one that they published. Don't let what people say get you down. I was told that there was no way that I could handle the stress of school with my schedule. Well i am almost halfway through and doing well. You hold the key to your own destiny, how you use it is up to you.

more on CT schools
There are many schools in conn. as you know, Some are very good if you can afford the private schools. If you are thinking a CC. then check out Tree rivers program, they have a extremely high pass rate on the NCLEX, 100% on first try 2004. It is highly competitive to get in to but the training is wonderful.

Acceptance Envelope-Thick or Thin?
I am in one of the 2 year community college programs, and my envelope was thin. Hope you get in. One thing to remember and I hope not to discourage you. In 2005, the year I applied, in Conn. there were over 2000 qualified aplicants that were turned down because of lack of openings.
