Any Good Nursing Book Suggestions?

Published

Hey ya'll,

My hubby will be deploying to the sandbox once again very soon :crying2: and I need something to keep me busy.....besides work and the farm :) . Anyone have any nursing books to suggest? I read "Emergency" quite awhile ago and loved it. Thanks for any replies.

Thank you for all these choices. I am going away in July and was looking for a good book to read about nursing. I don't know which one to try first! Boy did I love Cherry Ames when I was a young girl. You older nurses may remember her. I heard her books were put on display at a nursing conference for reentry nurses and was used in the speech given by a doctorate nursing professor. She told how those books had encouraged her and so many young girls to become nurses in my generation. I read each one in order. These books and my aunt who was a nurse made me decide to go to nursing school. My favorites were Cherry Ames Student Nurse and Cherry Ames Senior Nurse. Does anyone know if there are any books for adults about student nurses in the old diploma schools? I think the young people of today might find the old diploma schools interesting to read about. Since I enjoyed the old Cherry Ames books, I may still enjoy reading about those old diploma schools. Nursing school was so different then. As a young girl, my dream was to go to a hospital school of nursing like Cherry Ames. I ended up going to college and got my BSN and never got to experience hospital nursing school like I had always dreamed of as a kid.. By the time I grew up, diploma schools were already phasing out, and hospitals were already looking to hire nurses with BSN's. I think Master's in Nursing was unheard of then. Thanks for any suggestions of books you think I may enjoy as an adult!

On another thread, I came across an author of a book entitled Walking Like A Duck. It is about a nurse in recovery from pain killer addiction. It is a true story, and she is now recovered and an addictions nurse specialist. I am going to read it-sounds interesting. I especially like to see how a nurse can recover from pain killer addiction and go on to help others. It is on the thread about the nurse who was arrested for taking doses of patient's medication for pain.

The book titled, "Nurse" is by the author Peggy Anderson who is not a nurse but wrote about one in first person. The nurse in her book is anonymous. It is way outdated as it was from the 1970's but I still enjoyed reading it. I also enjoyed all of Echo Heron's books. They are heart wrenching at times. I never found them to be boring at all.

One book I'm going to get next is "Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul." And then a few other's that are listed here. :)
