hi, i'm a new mom of a fifteen month old beautiful girl. i start my pre reqs for the adn on jan. 20th, i'm so excited yet anxious, because in orietation the counselor mentioned that it would be almost impossible to maintain a job and go into the nursing program. being a single mom i need to work to provide for my child and i, so i would like to hear from other moms who are currently in the program or went through it , to know how you were able to provide for your child/children while in nursing school? any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.

Anytime you are in school, have work, and have kids. It will be a balancing act. I have not been to nursing school. I did the cna class. But i can tell you that what you need to make sure you have is a good support system. Family, friends, anyone who can help out. You will have to make sure you have daycare set up. Sometimes someone who can play cabbie. All that kind of stuff. You will need time to study. Good luck on your venture. And congradulations for making a better life for you and your child.

Quietnovember,
I am a full-time Mom and have a full-time job. Ocean County College in Toms River NJ has ALL of their nursing prerequisites totally online, including science.
Once you get all of them done you can get into their One Day per Week (ODPW) Nursing Program which is taught online except for their clinical day which is 7 AM to 7 PM one day per week. They have a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX RN exam!

I have taken A&P I and II online and I am going to take Microbiology Online this January. I hope to enter their ODPW Nursing program next fall (2009). One student actually communtes all the way from Pennsylvania to the Jersey Shore for the program. Its only one day per week for 15 weeks a semester so it works for them.
The Microbiology Online course will allow me to stay home with my kids before I step into the whirlpool in September. Here is their URL:

Hello,
Nursing school or just getting your prereqs, having a full-time job and having kids will be hard.
i don't work, but I consider my children a full-time job (I have 5). So it is a major fulltime job. It is very hard have to divide my time equally between all of them and study, but if I can do it anyone can.
Good Luck!

I am finishing up my fourth and final semester of pre-req's and I have four kids. It is a juggling act and I don't see how I can take on any more responsibilities, but if you want it bad enough, it is possible. Just make sure to set aside special time with your little girl because the kids do feel the strain also. Keeping to a schedule and learning to manage your time is also very useful because you will need every second! Good luck, it can be done!
