I believe they usually start with a diuretic.
hmm.. well if a diuretic wasn't an option and i was going to give an antihypertensive medication, what is usually prescribed?

First line treatment for hypertension is always lifestyle modification. Weight reduction, DASH diet, sodium reduction
If lifestyle modification fails, diuretics are usually the starting meds. Keep in mind that 2/3 of hypertension pts. need more than one medication to control thier hypertension.

Hydrochlorothiazide diuretic -> add beta blocker or ACEI.

as above, start with lifestyle modifications, then add a diuretic (HCTZ 25mg QD), then add an ACEI or a beta blocker.
