So it seems I'm not alone! Born and bred a NYer and now headed to the Carolinas! So what can I expect that the relocation brochures aren't telling me?! We will be visiting in a few weeks and hoping to be going down for good in 6-8 months. What can a NICU nurse with 10 years experience expect to find both financially and professionally? So glad I re-found this site! It was lost on my old computer and just discovered it again! Thanks everyone In Advance!

Good luck my Yankee friend. I hope your experience in N.C. is a good one. I met many nice people, but the weather was too hot for me. Cost of living was high, food is high, especially milk, bread, and meat. Rent was reasonable for area I was in, but utilities were a little steep, ran the airconditioner 24/7. Gasoline was about the same. Salaries were 25.00 hr to 28.00 w benefits. I was surprised at how much traffic there was even on slow days. Insurance for car was more expensive. But coming from NY you will probably find things equal or better. Plenty of work and plenty of overtime. Once again, good luck on your relocation. One benefit they told me about was retention bonus, lots of places pay 1000.00 every 6 months after 1 year of employment. Medical benefits were reasonable but some of the hospitals were suing United Health Care, a major insurance company for many hospitals, seems like they did not pay claims on time.
Thanks for the input!! I can't imagine things are more expensive there than here, unfortunately. The idea of no mortgage and living in a nice home with taxes under $10,000 is enticing though~
Two girls I work with are headed to Roanoke, VA within the year too! There is pretty much a mass exodus around here due to the cost of living and the overcrowded Island. We'll head down again this month and look at the area as perspective home buyers rather than tourists and see what we think. Thanks for th e good wishes too!
