Another "be honest" request.

Hello, all. As the title states, I am hoping that people here could take a look at my situation and tell me if it is possible (read: likely) I will get into a ABSN or traditional BSN program. The school in which I am most interested is UT Houston.

I graduated with a Bachelor's in sociology with an overall GPA of 2.59, but higher in science courses. (I feel really awful about that, hence this thread. I know schools do not care why one's GPA is low, but boy did I flub and flounder and almost drown before I got things together.) If I get all As on my pre-reqs, my pre-req GPA would be 3.34-3.44. I am a little worried about the A&P courses, but considering I have been reading A&P textbooks for fun since I was eight, I doubt I would have trouble focusing to study for them. :lol2: Other than that, I am confident that I will do well (i.e. all As) in my other pre-reqs.

My mother is an OT and I have been a little helper for her since I was a teen, and got a job as a part-time rehab tech with another OT that I held down for years. She would give me a glowing reference. I minored in German (completely random, I know) and took four semesters of Spanish; I am always willing to hone my skills with these two and plan to pick up more languages later. But, as it stands, I am not proficient in a foreign language.

My intent is to eventually get a MSN in order to be a family nurse practitioner. I am most likely also going to get an MPH. My dream job would be some sort of community health nurse and advocate in developing countries...if not that, then pretty much the same role in impoverished areas in the United States. I am getting volunteer hours working with disadvantaged people, but it is honestly not relevant to nursing.

I do not know what else to add. Sorry this is so long. I am nervous because this means more to me than I can easily express. Although I understand there are more options than nursing for the same sort of "healthcare social justice" goal, this is my dream. But is it possible for me to get into this school? If not, is it possible for me to get into ANY BSN program? If yes to either, what would make me a stronger candidate? What other advice would you give? I would prefer to stay in Houston as I would be able to live at home for free, etc. but would not mind hearing about universities elsewhere.

Thank you for reading and for any advice or insight you might have.

I am looking to start summer or fall 2013.

And I just realised I have such lofty goals! I am not quite the "save the world" person I might seem, I swear. :)

Honest Answer: I have no idea, you'd have to ask UT Houston about it. GPA is often one of the biggest factors in admission decisions, but without talking to them or actually applying, you don't know what kind of GPA UT Houston is looking for. Good luck.

I would give UT Houston a call and (like the poster above said), ask what they're looking for, and ask what you can do to improve. If you kick-ass at all of their other requirements, your cumulative GPA might not be an issue.

Why not check your local community college and get into the Associate Degree in Nursing program? Once you get your associates degree and you pass the NCLEX, you are an RN. It takes but another year or two through many bridge programs to get into a BSN and maybe you will be a more attractive candidate for UT Houston.

Look into the MSN programs as well, they might have MSN/MBA programs which might help you in the right direction
