Another Compact State Question

Published

Despite reading many threads about compact states, I do have a question. Please respond to the following:

If you apply for an RN license in a compact state (for example, Mississippi), and then after receiving the license move to another compact state (for example, North Carolina), will North Carolina then require you to apply for a North Carolina RN license after living/working there for an extended period of time (for example, after one year; say when it's time to renew your license)? Or, can you simply maintain your Mississippi license, yet continue to work in North Carolina (for example, 5 to 10, etc years down the road)?

Thank you for the response.

The issue is if it is a compact state, they will not issue a license that is valid in the other compact states if that is not your legal residence before you start the application process. They will issue a license that is valid for that one state only, just like it was done pre-compact pact time.

OK, I see. I was confused because she mentioned IL, which is not a compact state.

Now I have a question. If the poster moves to IA (a compact state) and is issued an IA-only license prior to establishing a residence there, can the status of the license easily be changed to include compact privileges upon moving to IA, or is it necessary to re-apply for the license entirely?

I was sure that I read in the application materials(which now I cannot find for some reason) that Illinois IS a compact state; as I recall, it seemed only a very few states are not compact states....but that most of those midwest states are compact states. Did I misread that? Can someone please give me the website again to see which are compact and which are not? Thanks!

You mis-read it. IL isn't a compact state. There was talk of joining the compact when the IL Nurse Practice Act was renewed in 2008, but it didn't happen.

What if you live and work in different states, both of which are compact states?

You're good to go. For example, you live in NE and hold a NE license with compact privileges. You can then work in IA on that license.

Thanks, Jolie, for all the info---it's much appreciated!
