Anesthesia Tech from the view of a Nurse Anesthetist

Nursing Students SRNA

I'm currently bridging from LPN to RN. I've been offered a position as Anesthesia Tech PRN position at a local hospital. I was interested primarily as a way to get into the hospital. I realize a tech position has no nursing duties or responsibilities. Maintaining a sterile field, stock supplies, transporting patients and cleaning equipment seems to be the gist.

Other than observation and a learning how a surgical floors operates, would this experience be of any use or advantage as nurse from the CRNA standpoint?

I would like to work surgery or cath lab down the road.

I'd appreciate any insight and feed back that could be provided about the daily interactions between these disciplines.

Specializes in CRNA.

It's a good job for where you are in your career. If you're interested in becoming a CRNA in the future you need ICU experience once you're an RN.

If you were an anesthesia tech who decided to go back to school to become an RN and then a CRNA that might be somewhat useful because you would already be used to an OR/anesthesia type of environment. However, since you are already in nursing school I don't see any benefit. You must have ICU experience in order to become a CRNA so I think it would be much more beneficial to be a nursing assistant or student extern in the ICU. Working in surgery or cath lab in the future will not help you on your road to becoming a CRNA.
