Anatomy class while pregnant

Published

HI, I just recently found out I am pregnant and I am enrolled in Anatomy class this spring. Has anyone taken anatomy while pregnant? I saw I need a doctor's note to attend the class. I have emailed professor and have an appt soon with doctor to discuss the risks. Does anyone else know about the risks? and what kind of special care I need to take?

Thank you!!

I think you will just need to be prepared to take frequent breaks to go into the hallway for fresh air when doing dissections. You will have protective gear, such as gloves, aprons, and you can wear goggles, to insure you don't come in direct contact with the preserving fluids. You shouldn't have much more discomfort than with any other class.

There was a girl that found out she was pregnant during the quarter and stayed in the class. You can wear a respirator during class. They sell small disposable ones at Lowes, home depot or online. Personally I thought the smell was strong and I am not pregnant. I tried to hold my breath and breathe through my mouth as much as possible. I didn't spend much time around the cadavers because I hated the smell and I got a B in the class.

I know that our professor offered MSDS sheets for all of the chemicals you might be exposed to in class. You could take those to your physician so that he or she can review them for any potential safety issue.

A girl in my class and I were pregnant during AP 2, the professor just advised us beforehand to have a mask to block the fumes that come from the preserving fluid. If we felt nauseous then we could take breaks. nothing to it.
