Questions

1) A 36-year-old man enters the hospital in an extremely debilitated condition. He has purple-brown skin lesions (a symptom of Kaposi's sarcoma) and a persistent cough. A physical examination reveals swollen lymph nodes, and laboratory tests find a very low lymphocyte count. Information taken during the personal history reveals that he has multiple sex partners with whom he frequently engages in unprotected sex. What is likely to be the man's problem and what is his outlook?

2) A young girl requires a liver transplant due to failure of her liver to function. What is required for her to have a good prognosis and why?

3) A woman comes into the hospital emergency room complaining that she is having problems swallowing and her neck is swelling. She was involved in an automobile accident a couple days ago but only bruised her neck. What could be the problem?

4) Max is bitten by a rattlesnake while on a camping trip. His friends immediately apply ice packs to the bitten area to slow the spread of the protein-based toxin; they then rush him to an emergency facility. What treatment would be given and why?

5) A physician orders Tylenol for a temperature greater than 101 degrees F. The patient's temperature is 100.4 F. Explain the rationale for not medicating a fever of 100.4 F. 6) Why do schools require inoculations for childhood diseases such as mumps, measles, and whooping cough? Why are the inoculations of value?

What have you done so far? Is there a particular question or aspect that you are stuck on? The questions do not seem particularly difficult and have some decent clues in them as to what you are dealing with.

The people here are very willing to help when someone's stuck. However, if you just want to post questions and have them answered for you, you are likely to get a lot less help and possibly even some responses that are not 100% kind.

I'm stuck on most of them, I don't really just need the answer but just guidance. For number one I'm thinking that he has an STD, could be HIV. But then having swollen lymph nodes doesn't confirm that he has the disease.

So, what makes you think STD and specifically HIV?

wow, that is your anatomy and phys class? We dont do anything like that at my school. In microbiolgy we had some questions like that but we dont do anything clinical in my A&P II.

Tell me about it... I have kind of an idea about the question but other than that i'm lost.

#5 Fever helps to kill off some of those microbes. Not to high to be dangerous, but may be helpfull.

Thanks, 104 is normal for some body areas right?

You're on the right track with number one, I googled swollen lymph nodes AIDS and got an interesting article. Usually the answers to these questions are very simple, so don't over think it.

Your professor should have provided sufficient information to answer each of these questions. Look at the questions, figure out what systems are affected by the various signs and symptoms and then check your physiology book and any supplemental materials and notes to see what you can figure out.

I'm happy to help, but you need to do the work yourself. You will understand it a lot better if you do.

So, what in question 1 led you to list STD maybe HIV AIDS? Gay men get diseases other than HIV AIDS. Pick a disease that affected the male population and it likely affects both heterosexual and homosexual males. How does his sexual orientation fit with the other signs and symptoms? Is it important? There are all sorts of reasons for swollen lymph nodes. Virus, infection, cancer and inflammation can cause lymph nodes to be swollen. Is his sexual orientation and swollen lymph nodes sufficient to suggest a diagnosis? What are the other signs and symptoms given in the problem? Which one(s) are important to diagnosis?

As far as fever, you need to know normal body temperature is. If you think that normal for certain areas of the body is 104, why is it normal, what body areas, etc.? What does a normal temperature indicate? What does an abnormal temperature indicate? Why would you treat or not treat one or the other?
