An interview with an ob gyn nurse

How did you get this job? I was recommended by a friend.

What kind of training did you have? 1 year at a high-acuity, high birthrate hospital.

Where did you go to school? Samuel Merritt.

How long were you in school? 1 year.

What kind of classes did you take? Nursing classes.

How did you get your foot in the door? I graduated in June 2008 and applied to many jobs across the country, I took the first job I was offered which was in labor and delivery.

Is it easy to get a job in this field? When I graduated jobs were just starting to be harder to get, I was lucky, I found this job 2 weeks after I got my license.

How long did it take you to get to where you are from your first job in the field? I am in my second job in L & D. I love my new job, much better atmosphere, and the coworkers are great.

Can you live comfortably on the pay? Yes, but I have huge student loans that I wish were gone--of course!

Is it possible to have a family and still have this job? Definitely.

Do you enjoy doing what you do? Most of the time until I get a patient that views the nurse as the enemy when wanting a natural childbirth. I love to help someone with a natural childbirth but for some reason some patients come in thinking that being in a hospital means many unnecessary interventions which do not happen at this hospital.

How long have you been in this field? Just 2 years.

What made you want to become an ob gyn nurse? I did not set out to be in L & D, it was the first job I found but it is great.

hi, i hope this helps you, i am a 39yr old mother of two and married for 17yrs. i have been a ldrp/high risk ob nurse for 8yrs now and have recently passed my certification exam for high risk in patient ob. :yeah:

how did you get this job? i took my first job as an ob nurse just out of nursing school. i was in a winter internship in the same unit just before i took my nclex.

what kind of training did you have? 7months with a preceptor then continuous questions and support

where did you go to school? i received my bs in biochemistry( i worked as a med tech)at westfield state college in 1992 then back to school for nursing at stcc (springfield technical comm. college) for my associates in nursing in 2002.

how long were you in school? 5yrs for my first degree(including medical technician), then 3yrs for associate

what kind of classes did you take? biology/chemistry/nursing theory

how did you get your foot in the door? internship in labor and delivery

is it easy to get a job in this field? no, nor would i recommend going into a specialty with out at least a year of med surg!

how long did it take you to get to where you are from your first job in the field? i have grown so much in this profession, i came from a small community hospital where i learned, and still keep with me, the basics of nursing and knowledge of ldrp to a large high risk unit that i continue to grow with everyday!

can you live comfortably on the pay? i have been at my current hospital for 3yrs and the pay and benefits are much better, of course, the more i make the more i buy! so, with that being said, yes as long as you live within your means!

is it possible to have a family and still have this job? absolutely! i went back to school when my kids were 3 and 5yrs old. they are now 13 and 16yrs old! i currently work 36hr days and have more time now than i ever did!!

do you enjoy doing what you do? i love my job, every aspect of it!

what made you want to become an ob gyn nurse? when i was in school i was dreading my rotation in ob/gyn because i already had kids and i knew this was something i was not interested in. my third week into the rotation i couldn't wait to go back and my professor said that i had a gift and i should reconsider! i decide to apply for the internship in l&d that would eventually take me to where i am now.
