This is a parasitic disease. You will do a history and physical. Assess the abdomen. Look for any of these signs and symptoms:

  • diarrhea
  • diffuse abdominal tenderness
  • tenderness over the cecum and ascending colon
  • stomach pain and cramps
  • fever
  • chills
  • bloody, mucous diarrhea
  • stools positive for E. histolytica
  • weight loss
  • weakness,
  • abdominal swelling
  • pain in the upper-right abdomen
  • cough
  • nausea
  • jaundice

Complications include appendicitis and perforation of the intestinal wall. Infestation can spread to the liver (very common), lungs, pleural cavity, peritoneum and brain.
