Amnp uab - want to get in so badly!

hey lbuac! this is actually my first post on this site but i too can relate to your story. i'm wanting to apply for summer 2012 also! my gpa isn't all that great either (i worked a lot my undergrad career as a cardiac care technician at a hospital, worked around nurses for about 5 years)i actually have a cum gpa of 3.2 which i'm not even sure if they take the cumulative (grad and pre-req courses at 2 other schools) or just my undergrad from my bachelors? i'm currently finishing up my pre-reqs this year too. i'm applying to other programs but this program is definitely on the top of my list so im also wanting anyone's input on my possible chances and info on their experience if they've completed or are currently in the program. i would like to apply to an absn program but my financal aid is very limited for another bachelors degree and wont cover it all if i pursue one. with the direct entry msn program at least your current bachelors will count for something lol. hopefully we'll end up being classmates...lol...good luck with your pre-reqs and apps!!

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I'll give it a shot. I'm currently in the AMNP program, and let me tell you, your GPA isn't going to set you back too much. They're really looking at your past experiences, what you've done with yourself, and what you can bring to the table. I'm not sure about graduate classes 100%, but I know that they do look at "cumulative GPA" as well as the GPA for the prerequisite classes specifically. Having a desire to work in the field, past knowledge and experience with the field, and a passion for being in the field are the things that they're really looking for. Good luck! Thank you so much for replying! I had pretty much given up on anyone replying to this after about a month of not hearing anything.

I'm happy to hear that GPA isn't the #1 thing they look for. I know it won't be easy, but I'm currently taking the pre-reqs now and have maintained A's, so hopefully I can keep that up. I guess it really makes a difference when you really know what you want to do with your career.

You answered everything I was really wanting to know.

I did have another question: Do you think you'll go the CNL route, or do you think you'll go the NP route? Just curious how that works within their program.

Monah86, yes, we have to keep our head up high. A year from now, we may be sitting next to each other in the AMNP program!! Wouldn't that be a wonderful day?! I know, it's good to know that even though my bachelor's isn't in nursing, it will count towards getting that Masters I want!

I do currently work and we are basically living on one salary (my husband's) so we can save as much money as possible for school purposes. I just know this is what I want, so I'm trying to do everything I can to make sure I have a shot at this program! :)

I also have one more question. Do you know approximately how many students apply and how many get accepted? I have been told approximately 300 apply and only 60 are taken. That number makes me really nervous, but I just wanted to know so I could have some knowledge of what I'm up against. Thanks so much :)

I'm sorry it took me so long to answer. I've been planning to do the CNL route, I'm really excited about what that job entails. To answer your other question, we started out with just over 40 students last year, but they probably accept a few more than that that never actually started with us.
