I am an ER nurse looking into traveling with my family. My husband is a solo practitioner attorney, but is willing to investigate appellate work and brief writing, as work-from-home options. My children are 16mos. and 6 y.o. We home schoolers.
We are thinking about selling our house and buying an RV to use for our housing.
Has anyone else done this?
We would love to go to Florida and be close to my grandparents for the winter and spend other seasons close to my parents in Ohio and my in-laws in New York.

Do not consider Travel Nursing or Agency Nursing for at least a year after working on a Unit as a Staff Nurse. If you have a Specialty, two years, is minimum.

It sounds like an adventure, something I wouldn't mind doing. The only thing I would be sure is to not invest way too much into an RV, you might get tired of traveling quicker then you think, and be stuck with a huge commitment unless you are paying cash for it. We had some friends that did this very thing with four kids, and they had a great time for almost a year, but they got really tired of traveling and wanted to settle down in a house. Needless to say, they bought this brand new RV, could not sell their house, and lost both to the bank. I am not saying it can't be done, but it should be well planned out. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Well, I must be really crazy because I have been traveling with my spouse, three kids and our animals for 8 years now.

What traveling agency do you use? My husband and I would like to start traveling in 2009 after I get a year experience as an RN in med-surg. We have a 13 year old (who will be 15) and a 10 year old (who will be 12) and we want to have then do online schooling. What extra costs are there in traveling with the family and is it worth it (do you make any more than if you stayed home and worked at the local hospital)? We have talked about doing some sort of traveling for years, but it is just now becoming a reality since I will be getting my RN license in May of 2008. I currently work as an LPN in med-surg and I love it. I hope traveling works out for us......please give us any pointers you may have since you have been doing it for so long. Thank you in advance for any help you may give.

I did it. I traveled with my husband and our 3 children for 2 years. He was a stay at home dad. I worked 5 shifts per wk. We did it for financial reasons and we made a lot of money. BUT it was not fun. It was very hard, but it was worth it. We got all our bills paid off and now we live in the home of our dreams. One word of caution- keep in mind if you sell your house you will loose your "tax home". You will not be eligible for some of the "tax free money" agencies try to lure you in with because you will not be supporting another residence other than where you already reside. Good luck!
