Am I able to get into a program with these stats?

Published

Hello guys! I am stressed about getting into a nursing program. My GPA right now is a 2.7 and I am doing a BS in biology (but am probably changing it to PSY major to boost my GPA UP). I have 2 semesters left before I graduate from college as well. The college i transferred from before was BMCC I had a 3.5.

I have 150 hours in the ICU (hands on work) and 200 Hours in the ER (patient care) for volunteer work at NYM hospital.

I have A&P 2 left, I am taking AP1 and microbio currently.

Grades for the courses I have taken (A&P 1, 2, microbio in progress)

Bio 1 - C+

Bio 2 - B

Chem 1 - B+

Chem 2- C

Pre cal - B-

Stats - C+

Psy Intro - C

life span Psy - A

Abnormal Psy - B

Health & nutrition - A

Should I retake courses I have received a C in and wait to apply ? I am losing hope and am upset most of the time. I study really hard but need to hear what you guys have to say as well.

Hi what school are you looking into exactly? Its hard to say. I went to College of Staten Island CUNY. I know that in order to get into the program you must have a 3.0 pre req GPA of Anatomy, Philosophy, English, Psychology and the NLN in order to be a competitive applicant. Your overall GPA has to be atleast a 2.5. I received a C+ anatomy one and a C+ in stats and I was able to get in.However my overall GPA was a 3.4 or so at the time and prereq gpa was a 3.0. Goodluck

NYC is very competitive, especially for the public schools. It never hurts to apply with your current grades, but if I were you, I would look at the prerequisites for the schools you are thinking about applying to and retake them. When you retake them, settle less for nothing than an A. Sometimes schools will place more emphasis on prereq/Science grades, so for that reason I would start there. Make sure you get A's in A&P and micro too. Hope this helps. Good luck to you and don't give up.

thank you i appreciate it ! but as how it is looking now i am probably getting a B+/A- in micro lecture, C in micro lab and B+in AP1 :/

i am looking into all schools overall in NYC ect..just i know people these days have over 3.2 and up and dont even get in lol. I dont know if my recommendation letters, volunteer work, and personal statement will help me so much with my grades =/.. feeling really discouraged because nothing else i wanted to do more..i am willing to retake courses over but wondering if i can get into schools with the grades i have now

Admission to nursing programs comes down to pretty much the same thing it always has; number of qualified applicants versus new class slots.

Just take pre-nursing applicants and rank them according to GPA or whatever formula (such as half GPA and half NLN or other standardized exam), then start from highest until you've filled the class.

It hasn't been possible to get into many NYC area nursing programs with bare minimum qualifications since probably the 1980's through maybe a bit of the 1990's. Back then when no one wanted to become a nurse schools were closing and or there were often opening left even after those with "2.5" GPAs got in.

Fast forward to now when everyone and their grand mother/father are going into nursing schools are spoiled for choice. Especially the CUNY programs which are limited by financial and other constraints from creating larger classes.

Best bet for someone with a "low" GPA or even in the 3.0 area that keeps getting shut out is often one of the larger private schools like NYU. Over the years have known several persons who got tired of dealing with Hunter and just went to NYU. Yes, it was a financial hit but they got in, graduated and now have their licenses/working. This as opposed to sitting around Hunter-Bellevue cooling their jets because several hundred applicants apply for new classes that only have about one hundred or so spots.

I wouldn't retake anything just yet.

First you need to decide where you are going to apply then understand how they calculate the required GPA for admission.

If a program in question is only interested in your pre-nursing sequence grades then do that average to see where you are. Also many programs will start having open houses either later this year and or sometime early in the next. Go to as many as you can and speak with instructors/advisors to get their opinion.

Finally look at schools such as Phillips Mount Sinai Beth Israel that have interviews as part of the application process.
