Alverno College Nursing Students Out There?

Published

:idea:Can anyone out there please reply by giveing me some insight on how you think the program is going???? I am interested in applying to the program, but would like some feedback from current students.

I spent 3 semesters at Alverno. I didn't care for the majority of the nursing instructors. I went to the school because there wasn't a waiting period to get into the program. You really have to be a motivated self learner at Alverno. It is all women at the school and you HAVE to get to know each other and rely on one another to pass. Not cheat, but study together A LOT. The CNRC is a nightmare! And when you bust your ass to get good scores, or do well on projects and papers it doesn't count for much when other classmates are skimming by half assing it just to get the same PASS for a grade that you did. Forget about having a social life too. You will be studying 24/7. I was always a good student, mainly A's and B's throughout my education. I had my head buried in the books all the time!

If you live near Milwaukee you have a lot of other options open to you. Save your tuition, and go somewhere a little cheaper. You'll save yourself stress and frustration.

I'm actually having to go back to my community college, but we all have to live and learn. I will say that if you chose Alverno you will meet some great friends there.

I know what you're saying. I am in the same boat. I completed 2 full years of nursing curriculum just to start all over again, because I chose to leave Alverno. On the bright side, we already know what is coming at us. Hopefully the courses we need to retake will be easier.

Thanks! It sounds like the instructors aren't great but aren't awful. I went for my BS at a school where the nursing students did clinicals at Mayo so I understand most schools in the Milwaukee area won't measure up. I actually love group work and study groups, that said I also need time by myself. I am not afraid of hard work and my significant other is fully aware of the commitment I will me making to nursing.

Trusty, I totally support you and feel you, we have same problem verbatim what you said in Gateway Technical College, Kenosha or Burlington campus. TERRIBLE teachers, HORRIBLE rules, DISGUSTING ADN program, no support for students, instructors out of touch, rude, busy, lazy, protective of each other if you complain but ignore students and look at you from atop. I wish I never enroled in ADN at GTC, it sucks!!! I am a 4th semester student, took me 5 years! (1.5 -for prereqs, 1.5 -waiting list, 2 years program -if you can read 200+pages per week per class and do other pointless projects and readings for other classes, and you have to have a min. of 80% on all of your tests or you fail. Fail twice the same class-you're outta the program!)

I am sorry for the people who have had a bad experience at Alverno. First you must understand the curriculum. The school is driven by self assessment, requiring the ability to honestly reflect upon your own abilities. Second you must be able to apply information to the real world setting. And third yes, the CNRC is a night mare, but I have not heard different from other nursing schools. I transferred into Alverno without a problem, graduate in may, and have already been accepted into grad school at Marquette w/o problems. So to anyone who is asking about Alverno, I have found the school to be great. Yes, it's tuition is high. Yes, their expectations are high. But why would you settle for less? As a nurse you should full on face challenge, expect some falls, pick yourself up and then learn. I can honestly say that this is all that they expect of you.

I know it has been a few years since someone asked about Alverno College. I graduated from Alverno College and realize now that all of the "Extra work" and "Abilities" I had to validate on have made me a better nurse. If I could do it again I would. They went as far as teaching us how to network by exposing us to the whole graduating body and teaching us etiquettes by providing an etiquette dinner where we could network with non nursing students. The graduation was the most beautiful event ever. Most of the nurses I graduated with have either begun registering for their Masters or are talking about advancing their degrees. Many nurses are part of some nursing organization or are committee involved. I felt confused and wondered if I made the correct choice when I was still in school and wanted to give up and move to another school due to some of the negativity and rumors but I wasn't a quitter, and I am now proud to say that I am an Alverno Alumni. Alverno's teachers have to still work in the field. They are all working somewhere and still involved with patient care, that is a requirement for those teaching, so anyone who said that the instructors weren't in the field were misinformed. I never listened to any one else, instead I sought the truth myself. That's why I stayed and why I graduated with a BSN.

Very well said.
