Algebra & Chemistry Advice

Published

Algebra is my weakest subject. I know it is for a lot of students, but as for me, I really don't get it. I cannot utilize the free student tutoring at school because it's in a group setting and I NEED one on one tutoring. I am currently taking my last algebra class and I need to pass it in order to go onto Chem this fall. I started this class about 3 weeks and ago, but I hired a tutor and he has been tutoring me since the first week of June and it's actually paying off. I am doing great!!! :yeah:So my question is, since I have never ever had a chem class (I have no clue what to expect) would it be safe to assume that I will probably struggle since it is dealing with math? Do you think I should probably start looking for a tutor now?

I personally love algebra and chem lol, but I think you'll be fine in chem. There will be chemical equations, but nothing like algebra, more looking at the charges of an element to see which other element will go with it. The math that it is used is easy calculations. I honestly, think you'll be fine.

I just finished Chemistry with an "A" last semester, and I hadn't had an Algebra class in 15 years! There aren't any real Algebra problems in Chemistry, just dimensional analysis, which is working with proportions.

Dimensional analysis might sound a little scary, but it's no more difficult than following a recipe when you only have teaspoons and no cups. If you can figure out how many teaspoons are in 1/4 cup, you've just done dimensional analysis! :)

Never assume you're going to struggle with something. Always start with the attitude that you're going to kick ass and take names!!! Positive attitude is 1/2 the battle!

Maseca, thanks for the positive advice!! I am nervous because this past spring I was taking Algebra and struggling big time. After attending 4 classes, I had to withdrawal because I could not find a tutor anywhere and I knew I was going to fail. Luckily, I was able to find a tutor before taking this last algebra class and everything is going OK. I am sure hoping I won't need a tutor for Chem., because my checking acct. is hurting! LOL!!

Does your college offer a resource center with tutors? I know at the community college where I'm taking some of my prereqs they have a great lab with free tutoring. I've used it a couple of times and they were incredibly helpful. One tutor actually took the time to show me how to use my calculator for shortcuts!

Yes, our college does offer free tutors, but it's more like a classroom setting. You sit at a desk and when you have a question, you then go up and get help. I am the type of person that sometimes things need to be explained to me more than once or twice and that is why I have a private algebra tutor. He comes twice a week and explains everything until I get it. It's working though because I am currently getting an A!! With that being said, if I were to need help in Chem., I would most likely want a private tutor.
