Alberta LPN job hunt! :0

Published

Boy did I move back out west at the wrong time! Everything is ago with switching my license over..great! Now the work begins. I have over 5 years exp in Surgical, Medicine, LTC and I continually apply to every darn posting on the AHS website knowing I am wasting my sweet time. I am also a former AHS employee who left on great terms to move back home. If I had returned to my original hospital I am sure my manager would put me back on the roster. However I am now 1 1/2 hours from where I used to live! I feel like I need to pay a physical visit to these managers in the city just to get at least casual! I know all about the freeze..unfreeze..freeze. Just venting and looking for ANY tips to "get back in" Much appreciated!

The days of sneaking hires in through casual are pretty much gone.

Some of us can't even get an internal move.

There has been mass hiring in the float pools in Edmonton but that's about it. The Caritas System (Catholic Hospitals) are just as slow and I know people who were hired into temporary lines to cover leaves have had to go back to casuals.

Have you applied at the LTC, Assisted Livings, walk in clinics, because they seem to hiring .

OP you are now an external applicant. Internals are plentiful and they are facing challenges with finding work. Apply to everything you can.

Havent applied to all..still being picky..but I will now..

So then... all the LPN postings for Calgary..why bother posting them if they won't fill or move internally? I caved and msg'd my old manager to see if she has a string to pull..I will drive for shifts out there if I have to..it is my in...

All postings are reviewed closely due to workforce transformation and budgetary constraints. Positions are posted but may or may not be filled and there are 50-100 internal applicants for each position, especially in the cities. Managers will face grievances if external applicants are hired when there are multiple qualified internal applicants.

Your manager may be able to offer you temp or casual, but she will still be required to post a position for it. We can't hire anymore without a corresponding posting. The days of hiring on the spot for casuals are over.

You may find something in one of the small towns. Small towns are often desperate.

Thanks for the heads up :) it is in a small town so heres hoping!

And thank you for the input. I will update with my lack of success..lol

I hear your pain! I moved back to Alberta in 2011 and just FINALLY got a full-time position! I was casual at 3 different hospitals for 4 years.

Good Luck!
