Air Force Nursing 2013

Hi everyone,

I just recently started the process to apply to be an Air Force nurse. I'm trying to complete my packet for the January 2013 (Feb 19-Board, Mar 08-Decision). Anyone else currently starting or in the process? Any advice with gathering my information?

Any current Air Force Nurses that could give me insight about their experience, especially regarding their first assignment?

My husband is about to separate from the Army and we are used to that way of thinking and doing things (i.e. lots of misleading information, less family oriented, less options regarding career). My recruiter had mentioned that everyone goes into a general clinical nurse slot, but is given the opportunity to specialize into a department of their choice after one year. My initial response was "Yeah... riiighhhttt." I don't actually believe that I would be given such a choice so soon, but I'm not sure if that is only because of our experience with the Army. Can anyone enlighten me??

Thanks!!

Hi Guys...The ANG has been great, so much so that I have decided to go active duty. My transition so far has been nothing but positive. My unit has really encouraged me to follow what I am passionate about which I think shows a lot for the AF. I finished my app last night and meet with the CN Monday then it's the sit and wait game! I still have to head to COT, I haven't been yet with my unit (only in for 9 months now) so nervous about that as well. Honestly I love being in and hope my experience on the active side is just as positive. Just praying that I get selected. I am not sure how many slots are open for CC but hoping there is one for me. This is going to be a lonngggg couple of months. Good luck to everyone!

carlily0513,

hey, thats great!!!! I am glad that you love the airforce. I just got done with my second CN interview and it seems like all of the colonels are sooooo nice. this is my second time applying for the selection boards. back in february of 2012, I had applied when I was still in school and didnt get selected but there were only like 18 slots and my recruiter seems to think they wanted people that were already done with school, so now that I am, hopefully I will get selected too. LOL. you will do just fine with your interview. make sure your recruiter gives you a cheat sheet so you know whats gonna be asked. if you dont have one then I can tell you whats on it so you know and can be as best prepared as possible:). your right, it's gonna be a long time until march comes around. Where are you from, do you have any kids? Talk to you soon.

Hi,

Since this board is very selective I can see how difficult it can be to be selected while in school! I am sure this time around it will be a different story :-) As for myself, I have a 2 year old and my husband who is prior service Army. I did get the info on the interview which is a great help!! Can't wait to be done though. Hoping these next few months fly by. Are you currently working as a nurse? I know the AF has a great program for new nurses so that's something to look forward too.

You're welcome Kdazzle! My recruiter gave me that info while I was signing off on my application and he was sounding very optimistic about the high number of open slots but he didn't have any idea about how many packets would be reviewed at this upcoming board. January 15th was the date he told me as well but since he would be going on emergency leave he sent mine on 3rd.

Carlily,

Good luck at your interview! I had the same experience as kdazzle with a very kind chief nurse. She only asked me a couple of the questions that I was prepared for. She actually did ask a lot about our experience with the Army lifestyle and was curious about my decision to choose the AF over the Army. I got a lot of questions about family support with the decision, how I would feel about having to deploy, potentially leaving my spouse and/or children. It was more a discussion than an interrogation which was nice :)

carlily,

I have been a nurse for 4 1/2 years. I have 2 girls myself. their ages are 3 and 8. what made you choose the AF over the army-just curious. good luck on your interview. my recruiter wont be sending my packet out until the deadline which is monday due to some things on my credit report that I had to explain and write out when my husband was laid off last year. that part is so stupid but I got to do it though. talk to you soon.

Is anyone else as nervous/excited/anxious as me??? Geesh I wish it was March already!! :-)

YES!! I'm doing whatever I can not to think about it. Even planning a vacation at the end of March to look forward to so I can attempt to ignore how slow these next six weeks will be... :)

JillyRN,

yes, me too!!! I am anxious for march to get here. since I was a non-select before, I am just trying not to get my hopes up too high I guess this time and I'm just keeping my guard up a little extra this time but still trying to stay positive too, if that makes sense. LOL. good luck to all who applied. 40 slots sure doesnt seem like alot. I wonder how many applicants there were. talk to you all soon.

Just some things to keep us occupied while we wait :-) ...What are your base choices? Are you guys planning on heading to COT in May if selected?? Any ideas on moving after COT and how that works with our families?? For example, do we fly to Alabama go to COT, then fly back to home when we are done, then drive to wherever we are stationed or leave from Alabama to our base?? Just thought i'd give us something to chit chat about! Hope you guys are staying warm...it's frigid up here!!

Good idea Carlily. I just listed states in my workbook since we aren't familiar with many AF bases. I put North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas and California. We currently live in Hawaii, so I would like to get back to the East Coast so it would be more convenient to visit family in Michigan. For overseas, I put Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, Italy and Turkey.

I'd love to get the May COT date if selected, but August would work too. It would give us more time to get our plans settled. I have the same questions regarding travel between COT and the first duty station. From what I hear, you report to your first duty station right after COT. You can take upto 10 days of leave in between, but some assignments don't really allow it if you're starting an orientation program soon after. If all works out, My husband would hopefully move us during COT, and I would fly to the next location. Unfortunately, there would not be enough time to travel back to Hawaii :(

Where are you currently located? I've heard the temps are dropping rapidly in the midwest! Stay warm!

We are in New England and boy is it ever cold :-) Hence why we have asked for southern states haha. We put Texas, 2 in Florida, and California. Hoping for COT in May as well. I'm in the guard so I am trying to transition out at a time that works for my unit too. I am going to have to ask about the moving part, super confusing. Just nervously awaiting any kind of information. haha March can't get here fast enough!!

we are from cincinnati and it's about 20 degrees right now-buurrrhh it's cold. I hate the cold and so does my husband. we put down florida, georgia, south carolina, las vegas and texas. I wasnt told to put any overseas places cause the chance of getting that on your first duty station is very rare. even the CN that i interiviewed with even said that. I know a girl that I met on here that got japan as her first duty station and just graduated from cot this past september. I will have to ask her again but i am pretty sure she said you go straight to your assignment after COT. I think the military will be packing your stuff for you while your at COT and I will be having my husband try to get things squared away while I'm gone-the best that he can. LOL. I wanna say that I have heard that you can get a 10 day leave but my friend applied to work in the recruiters office for a couple weeks after COT so she could be home to get things in order but she technically wasnt "off of work", you know what i mean? it took them a couple of months for her to get her things sent to her but that might be because she is over seas but im not sure. I picked the COT date in july. august would work for me too but july or may would be best because I wanted to get done and move in the summer so it wouldnt effect my daughters school schedule if possible but i know thats not guaranteed though. LOL. talk to you all soon.
