Air Force Nursing 2013

Hi everyone,

I just recently started the process to apply to be an Air Force nurse. I'm trying to complete my packet for the January 2013 (Feb 19-Board, Mar 08-Decision). Anyone else currently starting or in the process? Any advice with gathering my information?

Any current Air Force Nurses that could give me insight about their experience, especially regarding their first assignment?

My husband is about to separate from the Army and we are used to that way of thinking and doing things (i.e. lots of misleading information, less family oriented, less options regarding career). My recruiter had mentioned that everyone goes into a general clinical nurse slot, but is given the opportunity to specialize into a department of their choice after one year. My initial response was "Yeah... riiighhhttt." I don't actually believe that I would be given such a choice so soon, but I'm not sure if that is only because of our experience with the Army. Can anyone enlighten me??

Thanks!!

I got a call from my recruiter this morning at 8am. He told me I got selected as first alternate and will start Oct/Nov. I am excited about this. Starting May would have made me rush in selling my house, so this gives me extra time. I would not have cared what alternate number really. I just wanted to make it and I know joining the air force as a nurse is a step forward, and no alternate number would have ruined that.

That's great Bayern78! I agree, an alternate still means you'll get there soon. Are you going into a specialty or M/S?

everyone,

just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I was a non select. my recruiter didnt have a reason why. just sucks that this is my second rejection. maybe this just isnt meant in the cards for me and my family. I truly believe that every thing happens for a reason. it's a bummer yes, but i'm not going to dwell on it though. good luck to everyone else waiting.

I'm so sorry to hear that kdazzle. This just mean's there are other opportunities out there waiting for you. I'm still very confused now because I was supposed to meet with the recruiter in about an hour, but he just texted me to say that all Clinical nurse boards were cancelled through the end of this fiscal year? The next one would be in October. I'm wondering if this means I was a non-select as well?

Hey Kdazzle, I am sorry to hear that, chin up though, you're right everything does happen for a reason! This may not be your time but I bet something awesome is in the cards :-)

JillyRN, That just seems so weird?!? Doesn't make any sense...Are you still going to meet with him?

Bayern78, Congrats!! and you're right any alternate # is awesome...one step closer :-)

Okay, I just confirmed it. He said an email was sent out this morning that they didn't give much notice but were not making up the clinical nurse board and there would be no more for this FY. I'm able to reapply in October if I wish to, but would have to have new LORs completed. What a rollercoaster this whole process has been. It's upsetting, but I'm looking forward to pursuing some other opportunities. Thanks for all the information every has posted and for the encouragement. Congrats to all the specialty selects!! You guys are will make the country proud

Sorry to hear about that. Have you ever thought about trying the other branches?

Reapply!!! I have read over several threads to try get a feel for what could happen.

One gentleman, an ICU Nurse from Chicago, posted this Feb 2012: "I don't know the specifics of the openings for these boards, since they change each time. However, I was overlooked 6 times and picked up on board #7."

Hi everyone,

I was also a FQ Med/Surg applicant for this board and have been following this thread for awhile. I just wanted to say I was selected as an alternate and I am looking at October time frame for being a select. My recruiter told me that all med/surg slots were filled with this last board and the alternates will be first selects in the new fiscal year 2014 in October. Its not a select but this also means I don't have to do COT in the GA heat :) I wish everyone the best of luck and for those who were not selected keep trying. If this is your dream then make it happen. Congrats to all the specialties!!

I had applied as a MS. I work on a cardiac special care floor, which is critical but not icu critical.

I talked with my recruiter today and I am also a Medsurg alternate. He said there was a 96% selection rate this board.

I am also a Med/Surg alternate and my recruiter told me I am an alternate. FFEMT what does a "96% selection rate for this board" mean? Did 96% of applicants get "selected"? For those of us who were made "alternates" to start in Oct 2014 what is the likelyhood of us getting in?
