Air Force Nursing 2013

Hi everyone,

I just recently started the process to apply to be an Air Force nurse. I'm trying to complete my packet for the January 2013 (Feb 19-Board, Mar 08-Decision). Anyone else currently starting or in the process? Any advice with gathering my information?

Any current Air Force Nurses that could give me insight about their experience, especially regarding their first assignment?

My husband is about to separate from the Army and we are used to that way of thinking and doing things (i.e. lots of misleading information, less family oriented, less options regarding career). My recruiter had mentioned that everyone goes into a general clinical nurse slot, but is given the opportunity to specialize into a department of their choice after one year. My initial response was "Yeah... riiighhhttt." I don't actually believe that I would be given such a choice so soon, but I'm not sure if that is only because of our experience with the Army. Can anyone enlighten me??

Thanks!!

Kdazzle,

I am in the same boat. I have 11 years prior servic

e, and have 5 years of working as an RN. Nothing to do now but keep my fingers crossed and hope I have what they are looking for. I wish you the best and hope you make it. Are you trying for AD or reserve?

Okay, I've posted before about how long it took to hear from a recruiter. It's now been like at least 10 days and no response. Is it okay to contact another recruiter?

So today is the day- headed out in a few minutes for my interview with the chief nurse. The unit is about 2 hours from my house, so got some travel before I'll be there. I'm horribly nervous, mostly about not being able to articulate why I want to join. I know why, but it is so hard to put into words somehow. I also have interviewed for anything for over 18 years, and even then it was "Have you done PD?" and "When can you start?" Not really an interview! I'll update when I get back home.

I'm back from the interview- which lasted 2 hours. The chief nurse is a Lt. Col and she had her asst. chief sit in as well, and she was a Major. The interview was not as intense as I expected, it was very relaxed and more of us talking that questions/answers. In fact, she opened the interview by asking me what questions I had for her. She told me that my work and life experiences would more than make me a good fit and that she thought I would do well and thrive in the AF. My preceptor (who is the Col. and Commander of the unit) had said that the CN would have to want me before I would be put in touch with a recruiter, and I left with the recruiter's phone number. I was given a tour of the unit and introduced to all the nurses, the pharmacist, some of the medics and a couple of physicians in the unit. I was also introduced to the deputy commander who is active guard and she told me that she and I would talk often if I decided to join because she would the one who would help get everything for the guard bureau, etc. Every question I asked was answered as if the CN was planning my orientation and I was already on board- even down to her telling me that their goal is for everyone in the unitis to be ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certified since they have a homeland response mission. When she was telling me that she pulled her TNCC book off the shelf and said that when I got ready to do the class that I could use her book instead of buying one. I would say that it went well, and now I just have to do a lot of talking things over with hubby and praying between now and Monday to see if I am ready to take the leap and call the recruiter. And- I have to tell my mom. :) I had mentioned it to her a month ago when this first came up and she didn't respond very well, so I need to figure out how to try and explain it to her. Any suggestions?!?

psycheab,

yeah, if I were you, I would contact another recruiter. This may be a dumb question, but are you sure you contacted the right recruiter? either way, someone should have gotten back with you. are you from cincinnati by chance?

hey mamakellyd,

I cant remember, are you applying to be in the guard? I have never heard of doing an interview first and then starting the whole process. I am glad your interview went so well. I hope you have better luck than I did. My interview last year went super well and I still wasnt a select. my second interview for this selection board went just as well so I am just waiting these next few days to see if I get picked this time. Good luck to you:)

Mammkellyd,

So happy the interview went well! I would just get in touch the with the recruiter and get the ball rolling. The guard is different than active in the the sense that once you meet with the unit and they want you, you are all set. There isn't really a board per se. So congrats sounds like as long as your MEPS physical goes well you will soon be on your way!

To the other canidates on this thread...this is going to be the longest week EVER!! :-) Hope you all are finding ways to pass the time...I now have no finger nails left...hopefully we will have great things to post in the next couple of days.:nailbiting:

Kdazzle,

This is my first attempt at the AD Air Force board. I am currently a CPT in the Army Reserve with 11 years in (6 years of AD mobilization). Hopeful that this will help, but you can never tell. It is always dependent on branch mission needs. Hopefully we all make it. Fingers crossed.

Haha Carlily, I love that little emoji. That's exactly how I feel right now. I'm also nervous that I haven't heard back from my recruiter. If by chance he has PCS'ed or is on leave, someone else would contact me right? I'm looking for any sort of reassurance that my packet did indeed make it to the board and that it was complete. Well, until Friday my friends... :whistling:

JillyRN,

I would just call them! It stinks they didn't let you know. I have been the one bugging my recruiter though, poor thing is probably hoping I get in so I leave her alone haha I'm just so darn anxious!!:barf02:

Yeah, I think I'm going to call him on my lunch break today. Even if he thinks I'm being annoying, at least they only have to deal with us a little while longer! Haha. The last time I have felt this sick with anxiety was after taking my NCLEX. :scrying:
