2011 Air Force Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) Applicants

Hi All~

There was a thread for last year's NECP applicants but I thought I would start one for 2011. Anyone out there applying to the Air Force's AY 2011 Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program? We have a page on Facebook as well, but I wanted to see if there was anyone else on here as well....

I was a 2010 NECP select but didn't get in to either nursing school that I applied to. That was the worst thing in the world (having to decline my NECP seat). One school had me calculated at a 3.66 GPA (they didn't accept a lot of my classes) and the other had me at a 3.70. In both cases, it wasn't a high enough GPA (the cutoffs were 3.74 and 3.77). I have taken more classes since and have brought my GPA to a 3.74 currently (still have two classes to finish up, but they aren't NECP prereq's); if I get an A in both (which I think I will), it will only bring me to a 3.76 (I have 86 credits currently so each A only brings up my GPA 1/100 of a point but a B can drop me 1/10 of a point). I have been accepted to Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis already and have applied to five other schools: Univ of South Florida, Univ of Central Florida, Univ of FL, Florida State U, and Univ of Maryland. I don't want to end up in the same boat that I was in last year with an NECP seat and no school so I decided to apply to a few schools.

Anyhoo, hopefully there are some more 2011 NECP hopefuls here. Last year it was really nice to have others to talk to who were in the same boat. :)

Kynchanted, Thank you for your response. I understand about the 2 year thing. That makes senese. I checked out UMB and theirs is 2 years and you can come in as a junior. A lot of schools aren't like that. Anyway, I was wondering about the car thing because I would like to go to UMB but the host school is College Park. Would I have to travel to College Park a few times a week for the NECP or ROTC classes? I know the clinicals would be in the city so I can easily get to them by bus. I am from here so I now the area pretty well and I know that from UMB to College Park it's an hour drive. I'd probably just drive though ( I hadn't planned on buying a car for a while). I know that you haven't started yet but it's just something to think about I guess. What other schools did you apply to and did you follow the NECP guidelines for pre-reqs or did you follow UMB's?

Hi! That is the tricky thing, finding a school that is completable in two years or less. You will have to drive from UMB to College Park, but you won't have to take ROTC classes there (or at all). You will report there if you don't want to take leave and school is out or when you have trainings to do, so I am thinking maybe once every few months? The other thing is you may need a car because clinicals are all over Bethesda, Baltimore, DC, and a few other areas. They can be pretty spread out from semester to semester. That has even made it difficult to decide where to live for me. I will be attending the Shady Grove campus to try to avoid Baltimore somewhat. But then I have to deal with DC. Last year, I applied to Univ of South FL and San Francisco State U and was waitlisted then denied at both schools. They had my GPA calculated at a 3.70 and 3.66 and in both cases, that wasn't high enough. This year, I applied to Univ of Missouri, St. Louis (got in with a 3.74), Univ of Central FL (got in with a 3.74), and Univ of MD, Baltimore (again, got in with a 3,74). I chose to go to UMB. I also applied to Florida State U and Univ of FL. I didn't get in to either school because they take their own students over transfer students. I followed NECP's guidelines for prereqs and then when I found schools I wanted to apply to, if there were any other extra prereqs I needed I worked on them as well. All schools will require A&P 1 and 2, at least one chem class, and Microbio, so if you don't have these done yet, I would start there. Some schools only require one chem, so I applied to schools that had that requirement because I have only taken one chem class. Most schools have the same prereqs as NECP does, hence the reason NECP requires them. How far are you off from applying?

I am still a while away from applying. I don't know exactly when I'll apply though but it's way down the road. I'm not exactly sure where Shady Grove. I would figure since UMB is in the city they would have their clinicals in the city. There is Hopkins, Mercy, Maryland General, Bayview, St. Agnes, Sinai, Harbour, Good Samaritan and then the closer ones that are in Baltimore County are Greater Baltimore (GBMC) and Franklin Square. I would really hope that you wouldn't have to travel all the way to Bethesda for clinicals. That is really far. Either way, I know where to start now as far as pre-reqs. Where did you do your pre-reqs? Does CCAF even have any of these classes? How long did it take you?

Hi! Shady Grove is in Rockville, which is about an hour southwest of Baltimore on a map (I have never been there so Google Maps is all I know from). I think that UMB's Baltimore campus has clinicals in Baltimore, but I am not sure since I am going to Shady Grove. Bethesda is actually only like 30 minutes from Shady Grove (again, from Google Maps), so it isn't too bad. If there are Baltimore or DC clinicals, those will be kinda far from my school. I did my prereqs through Pikes Peak Community College in CO and Univ of MD University College. I also did some gen ed classes through University of Phoenix. Where are you stationed? If overseas, UMUC is your best bet. If stateside, you should be able to find a community college in your area that has all of these classes. Classes like stat and nutrition you can take online pretty easily. Some of these classes could possibly be used to fulfill CCAF requirements, but CCAF is not a school itself, so no, CCAF doesn't technically have these classes. I have been in awhile and usually only took one class at a time, so it took a long time. From the time I started taking only NECP prereqs, it took about two years to complete them all. Some classes you can't go right into, that's the problem. For example, usually you have to take general college bio before you can take A&P (it depends on the school). You have to take college algebra before you can take chem usually (unless you can take a placement test and place out of the math class). That's why the classes tend to take awhile. Plus being overseas you have even slimmer pickings of classes than you would have if you were in the states. Hope this helps some!

i am currently enlisting in the air force at this time and i have a couple of questions about the NECP if you guys dont mind helping me out :]

i will be entering as an E-3, i know you cant apply until your an E-4.

how long usually does it take to rank from E-3 to E-4?

is it very hard to get into the NECP (do you really need around a 3.7 GPA)?

still have to take the TEAS?

I am actually enlisting now. But at the previous person stated I will be going in as an E-3. I am in college now (long way from my degree) but the more classes I can take now the less I will have to take when I get in. Thanks for all the info.

I also wonder the same questions as the previous poster.

What are the chances of getting accepted into NECP if you are in a job that is in demand?

Kynchanted, I've been following your posts here and on the FB site. And am interested in applying to UMB. I received my B.S. in computers from UMUC while overseas. Great School! The University of Maryland system is an excellent system for us military folk. My question to you is does UMB accept online courses? I saw on their website that they only allow a minimal amount of online courses for pre-requisites. I know your busy with your new path, but any advice would be helpful.

Hello! I am really looking into NECP, but I have a few questions maybe you all can help? :)

I noticed that many of you have chosen to go to UMSL. Do they accept online credits for your sciences and labs? Before I start taking any online classes I want to make sure they will be accepted for NECP and the school. If they do accept them do they have to be from AMU or DeVry?

Thanks for the help!

Hello everyone! I've recently been extremely interested in the NECP program the AF has to offer. I've always wanted to do nursing, so my supervisor told me about it. I have a few questions if anyone can answer them..:)

Have any of you takes your science/labs online? If so what online schools have you taken classes with AMU? DeVry?

what schools accept online classes? Does NECP accept online classes?

For the school I want to apply to is CCNE accredited is that OK? or does it have to be NLNAC?

I could ask a million questions, but i'll start with these few. This is such a wonderful idea! :) I like this blog!

Hi! sorry for the delayed response (I haven't been on here in a bit, nursing school keeps you really busy). UMB accepted all of my classes, but the only ones I took online were stat, government, sociology, and a few humanities classes. I didn't take any science classes online, but as long as you have a lab component to the class, they should accept it. Hope that helps some; please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions! :)
