I need to do a program on age specfic consideration on the hospitalized patient.Does any one have any interesting ideas of programs I could use or consider?

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but you might consider one on communication, because in order to provide care you first need to communicate. For example to do a head to toe assesment you will communicate differently with a young child and a teenager or an adult from an older adult with cognitive or hearing deficits. (then give the norms of that, if thats what your looking for.)Try communication through the ages with other things to such as inserting IVs or pre-opteaching, pain assessment and the list can go on, if you think this will work for your program. I work on a pediatric unit with ages ranging from 3days old to 21years.... we have a lot of age specfic tests that we are required to take annually including skills and communication techniques.

Yes, I agree with jkh. Communication is important. If you haven't heard the one about the nurse doing a respiratory assessment then you don't understand.

P.S. The story is that a nurse was listiing to an older woman's lungs and said Big breaths. The patient replied they used to be.

I like that one i be sure to included it in the program.When you do these required programs they cna be very boring and these ideas will make this one better that for the help.Sam

Communication is one aspect of "Age Specific Care", but do not fail to consider:

*Growth and development stages

*Adult life stages

*Adult learning principles

*Family Dynamics

*Sensory Deficits

*Cultural Sensitivity

These and many other foci can enter into the nurse's consideration of how to approach a patient/family with careful attention to the "age specific care" needs that present in the situation.
