After nursing school

Find residency programs in your area. They are competitive though. Try to find some sort of RN employment as soon as possible. Did you make any connections while you were in school? It is usually easier to transition as a new grad nurse to work at a place where you had your clinicals.

Also, ensure your resume looks professional, organized, and updated. If you use social media, ensure it is free from posts that could otherwise tarnish your professional image. Prepare yourself to answer common interview questions (you can find many online)... but do not give canned responses, be original and sincere. Dress professionally and do not overuse makeup nor jewelry... mind the fingernails.

Your first position might end up the least one you like, but always do your best with good disposition. Always remember that you will need references in the future. If the environment is toxic, quietly look for another job, and submit your resignation with a two-week notice. Leave gracefully. The bad experiences and how you dealt with them will help you discern future opportunities.

Working as a tech/CNA/extern can be helpful if you have time. Shifts double as extra clinical days because they give you a great opportunity for exposure and teaching on the floor. Nurses are typically more than happy to give you advice or provide teaching opportunities when they find out you're in nursing school.
