Affording Nursing School: What did you do?

Published

Hi ALL!!!

I just found out i was accepted to nursing school:yeah:! I work full time at a hospital where i receive full benefits (health, dental and vision). i am considering not working and being a full time student but i worry about not being covered. My quesiton(s) to you all those is nursing school:

1) How are you affording nursing school? Are you currently still employed?

2) If you had to leave your job how are you getting medical coverage?

These two things are keeping me really stressed as i have no idea what to do about either. I was told to take out a loan for the 2 years i will be in school but i worry about healthcare coverage.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

I was laid off in January from a completely unrelated career (human resources & recruiting), so I will not be working during nursing school.

I've been on COBRA since january 2009. My nursing school requires proof of insurance for enrollment, so when my COBRA runs out next June I'll have to get private insurance and eat the cost, if I can't get it through the school.

I got lucky and had a decent amount of savings when I was laid off, no mortgage (I rent) and no kids. So it's financially do-able for 2 years until I graduate, take the NCLEX, and start to look for a job.

I HAD to work as a CNA, because I had to have money to pay the bills. I spent the first 3 months without working, living on student loans, and I had a blue cross blue shield policy for 100 bucks a month with a well being visit each year, and a 1000 deductible...I was a young healthy male.

Some income is good, but do whatever you have to do get through school.

I too quit me job to be a full time student. I pretty much had to. I commute over 40mi to get to school, and its also an accelerated program so I dont get much time off (a couple weeks in between semesters, summer semester included).

I take out student loans and luckily I have a husband who carries our health insurance so I am covered on that end. But if I had to, my school had a health plan that I could have enrolled in.
