advice on trying to get into nursing with a low gpa

Published

I have a low GPA of 2.2 after I got my bachelors degree in communications.. My major did not require such high standards in grades to pass, I know it was really stupid of me for not looking for into the future but, so this is my reason for a low GPA.

my question is what do I need to do in order to get into nursing school in the northern California area? More specifically, How high of GPA will secure me academically and so I dont have to worry about getting rejected out of every nursing school I apply to after I finish all of my pre-req's. I just started pre-reqs by the way. And when should i begin applying?

Hi,

I have a low GPA as well and would like to try and get into to nursing school. I will be able to graduate with a BA for my undergrad in May of 2009. I am wondering if I should graduate with a low gpa or if I should take my pre-reqs for nursing school at my University and postpone graduation in order to get my gpa up? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

That's a good question. I graduated- I don't think I took off I think were very helpful in terms of getting myself together.

BUT now I have this undergraduate GPA that is never going to change. I have been doing well in the prerequisites, but the low degree GPA is problematic- one of my schools requires me to take the GREs because of my undergraduate GPA, and that's decided based on my GPA at graduation, not my overall GPA. That's a bit of a drag. Since I'm at a new school for prerequisites there's also the psychological advantage of being able to say that I have a 4.0 (.......at this school). I'm not eligible for certain financial aid and scholarships anymore because I have a BA already.

In the end, your cumulative GPA would be the same no matter what (assuming you don't need time off to recharge), so it's just a matter of what would work best for you. I'd look closely at the schools you plan to apply to see if there would be a benefit to one of the other.

Once you have a BA degree, you are not eligible of receiving grant money. And I think you are not eligible of any scholarships also(you have to verify this one with their department though). But the point is, you lose certain eligibilty a undergraduate student would get after you've recieved your first bachelor degree. That is something to consider.
