Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello,

Glad I found this site, I have a few questions for you experts. I am 34 years old and have spent the last 10 yrs in pharm and medical sales, I have learned alot of disease states and have or experience as well, that being said I am completely dissatisfied with my professional life and have considered nursing for some time now. I live in Long Island New york and have found a few schools that offer lpn programs at night, as well as several online facilities as well. I guess my question is what is the best way to get started keeping in mind I need to keep my day job right now? Can I begin a career with just an LPN and progress from there? Lastly, can you please provide me with a realistic salary expectation? I know I will be walking away from alot of money but I really don't care at this point in my life, but I do need to know if I will be able to pay my mortgage...thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure about the salaries for LPNs in New York, perhaps you can post that question on the New York Nurses forum we have here. LPNs though typically are paid in the mid to upper teens per hour, but NY salaries tend to be higher than elsewhere.

Yes, you most certainly can build a fine nursing career by starting with your LPN going to evening school. Working full time and going to nursing school is tough and demanding, but many of us, myself included, have had no other choice (I did the opposite and worked in the evening).

After you get your LPN, you can then get your RN (where the job opportunities are greater and the pay much higher) by attending an LPN to RN program that would take about a year (but only after you have certain pre-reqs and co-reqs done) while working as an LPN.

Then you can even go further can get your Bachelor's Degree like I did through an RN to BSN program and you're off an running.

Good luck acheiving your goals. You can do it!

hello.... i work in a nursing home in roslyn hgts and the lpn's there make $22 and hour, and the agency nurses make $26 an hour.

Six years ago I worked in LTC, specifically evening shift, and the rate of pay was 20.00/hr. This was on Long Island, Suffolk County.
