Advice please - My Fall schedule (longish)

Published

Hello, all. I value the opinion of students who are farther along in their nursing education than I am, but I need some feedback. This coming fall I am taking my final prerequisite class for the nursing program at my local cc, and I want to score an A, but I wonder if this is possible with my schedule. I hear so many stories about the time commitment one must make for A&P that I wonder whether my schedule will allow me this time. My schedule is as follows:

honors english

honors sociology

medical terminology

pre-calculus

A&P

I have to take the honors classes, but I want to take the medical terminology class so that I can possibly get a unit secretary job. The only class I would drop is pre-calculus, but because it is a pre-requisite for the statistics class at my school, I will have to take it at some point. Statistics isn't necessary for my Associate's degree, but it is a prerequisite for the 4 year school I plan on later transferring to to get my BSN.

I ask for your ideas, stories and advice - I want to maintain a 4.0 average this semester. If you've taken a heavier courseload with A&P and performed well, please share your story. I want to know if it's possible. And btw, I'm presently not working, but if I do work, it will be a campus job. Thanks for reading.

I think that it may be a little hectic for you. I would probably drop the pre-calculus because that may be a little difficult in and of itself. Sociology and English are generally not very difficult classes, but they tend to have a lot of busy work. Medical Terminology may actually benefit you with A&P and help to reinforce some terms, because both require a lot of memorization. Good Luck!

You'll notice that Medical Terminology and A&P will be a lot of the same material. I took A&P 1 last semester and I am taking Med Term this semester and a lot of it is just refreshers from my A&P class.

Honestly, I'd drop the Pre-Calc if you don't need it right now. That's a class you can take later.

Although, I'm a bit hypocritical with my advice because I tend to overload my plate and take 14-15 credits/semester just because I can.

If you have the confidence that you can do it, go for it. It's an incredibly rewarding feeling to work so hard all semester and see that 4.0 when you're all done.

I'd also recommend checking out your professors on ratemyprofessor.com so that you're prepared for the difficulty/ease of each teacher.

Best of luck!

Well I took AP1 Eng 102 Stats Span111 together last semester and that was straight A's...15cr

This spring I took AP2 Micro Math Eng 231 and Anth and got A- in Ap and B+(literally 89.2%) B in Math and A's in eng and anth....19cr

So it all depends on credits, time management...and luck...I would've had an A in micro if I hadn't been sick and drugged up (prescription for sickness) while taking an exam. The math was my fault though lol

April,

I know what you mean about overloading my plate. I relish the idea of taking all of these classes, but I just don't want to risk slipping at any point during the semester. I think I'll play it safe, though, becaue I have a feeling that A&P will not be kind.

Thanks, Bug for the level headed advice. My last semester was hectic, with classes from Monday thru Saturday. It'll be great having 3 days off to study.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys! Allnurses is the best...

Hmm...AP, micro and math - kudos to you for your As. Did you hit any rough patches at any time? I've started familiarizing myself with some A&P concepts because I am not a visual learner. Do you have any pointers on how to stay on top of AP? What study methods or habits did you employ with AP? Your replies will be money in the bank. Thanks for your input.

mostly just repetition, notes, READ THE BOOK, and study groups with likeminded individuals...oh and make sure you stay on top of your studies...if you miss one part it can throw you off tremendously.

Also make use of your professors office hours and if you need it use your schools science tutoring center.DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP!

familiarize yourself with your prof teaching style and figure out how to form your learning style around it. Makes life easier.

ps I didn't mean to sound all hooty tooty when I posted earlier...just wanted you to know it can be done. lol

Thanks, Slinky. You don't sound hooty tooty at all. I sought the help from folks here on AN because almost every prenursing student I've talked to (in "real" life) have scored Cs in A&P (and microbiology), so I have an overinflated sense of how "difficult" the classes are. I want to hear from people who've kicked a** in these classes, b/c the advice would be based on success.
